Minnesota Vikings 2025 Training Camp: Flores, Addison, & More
As the Minnesota Vikings gear up for the 2025 NFL season, the buzz around training camp is palpable. With rookies reporting on July 20 and veterans arriving on July 22, the team faces a mix of optimism and uncertainty. In the latest episode of The Real Forno Show, host Tyler Forness and producer Dave Stefano dive into the critical issues shaping the Vikings’ roster, from contract negotiations to legal challenges and strategic shifts. Here’s a deep dive into the key topics discussed, offering fans a comprehensive look at what to expect as the season approaches.
Brian Flores’ Contract Conundrum: A Potential Schism?
One of the most intriguing storylines revolves around defensive coordinator Brian Flores, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the 2025 season. Forness highlights a report by Ben Goessling of the Star Tribune, noting the Vikings’ interest in extending Flores, but the lack of an agreement raises eyebrows.
“The fact that he hasn’t been willing to, at this point, sign an extension… tells me that he probably doesn’t want to sign one for one of many reasons,” Forness says. “One of them being, he doesn’t want to sign one, period. The other is he just doesn’t like the terms that the Vikings are offering.”
Flores’ tenure has been transformative for the Vikings’ defense, turning it into a formidable unit with innovative schemes. His reluctance to commit long-term sparks speculation about his future. Could he be eyeing a head coaching job, or is there friction within the organization? Forness points out that Flores could still interview for head coaching positions without an extension, as the Vikings would likely allow it, but a lateral move to another defensive coordinator role would be blocked.
“Ben saying this in any form tells me that there’s some credence to it of some kind,” Forness adds, emphasizing Goessling’s reputation as a calculated and respected reporter. “If Ben says something, it’s not nothing. It’s a breadcrumb leading to somewhere.”
Producer Dave Stefano suggests it might be a negotiation tactic, with Flores leveraging his value after contributing to head coach Kevin O’Connell’s success. The Vikings could gain two third-round compensatory picks if Flores leaves for a head coaching job, softening the blow, but losing him would still be a significant setback. For now, fans are left to wonder if this is a minor hiccup or a sign of deeper issues.
Jordan Addison’s Trial: A Looming Suspension?
Wide receiver Jordan Addison’s legal troubles add another layer of uncertainty. Facing a DUI charge from an incident where he fell asleep at the wheel near LAX, Addison’s court date is set for July 15, 2025. Forness and Stefano discuss the potential for a suspension, with Goessling suggesting it could come within weeks, though Forness believes the NFL will wait until the case is resolved.
“I think it’s gonna wait until after the court date,” Forness explains. “The NFL has set precedent to where they wait until the case is closed… Sometimes somebody can be found not guilty, and they decide, ‘Nope, we’re still gonna punish you because we found that you are [guilty].’”
The hosts speculate that Addison’s decision to go to trial, rather than settle, indicates confidence in his defense. Stefano notes that court delays could push the resolution past the season, citing the StarCaps case where Pat Williams and Kevin Williams avoided suspensions through prolonged legal battles. If a suspension is levied, Forness predicts a three-game absence, likely against the Bears, Falcons, and Bengals.
“If he’s out the first three weeks, who’s stepping up? It’s gotta be Jalen Nailor,” Forness says. “If Rondale Moore is healthy, he’ll end up stepping into that third spot.”
The Vikings’ offense showed resilience without Addison last season, relying on tight ends T.J. Hockenson and Josh Oliver, alongside a robust run game. Forness believes the team will lean on this formula again, easing the pressure on second year quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
Josh Metellus’ Extension Talks: A Question of Value
Safety Josh Metellus, a key component of Flores’ defense, is another player whose contract situation demands attention. Despite his vocal desire to stay in Minnesota, negotiations have stalled, prompting questions about his role under a potential new defensive players added and Flores modifying his strategy leaving Metellus less valuable.
“If he’s such a big part of what Brian Flores wants to do, will he have the same value for the next guy, whoever that may be?” Forness asks. “Even if it’s the same defense, how that individual wants to use players could be different.”
Metellus’ versatility in Flores’ three-safety looks has been a hallmark of the Vikings’ defensive success. However, with the team possibly moving away from such packages, his value could shift. Forness and Stefano agree that Metellus deserves to maximize his earnings, but the uncertainty surrounding Flores’ future complicates matters.
“He wants to get his money, and he deserves to,” Forness states. “I’ll support every athlete who wants to maximize their value while they’re playing.”
Defensive Scheme Evolution: Adapting to New Personnel
Flores’ defensive approach is another focal point, with Forness excited about how new personnel will shape the 2025 scheme. The additions of Jonathan Allen, Javon Hargrave, and sophomore player Dallas Turner signal a departure from the NASCAR package, which relied on edge rushers to compensate for weaker defensive tackles.
“Now that you have the dudes, how does that change some of your personnel usage?” Forness wonders. “How does that change how many snaps Ivan Pace or Blake Cashman play?”
Flores’ adaptability is a strength, as he tailors his defense to the roster each year. Last season’s NASCAR package replaced the Bengal Hawk blitz, and 2025 could see further evolution. Forness praises Flores’ egoless approach, noting his willingness to consult players on scheme adjustments.
“He’s so fluid with those concepts and he’s egoless when it comes to his defense,” Forness says. “We’ve heard stories about him going to players [and asking], ‘What do you think about this?’”
This flexibility could make the Vikings’ defense unpredictable, keeping opponents on their toes. Fans should watch for how Flores deploys Turner, who will drop into coverage and create pressure, even if his sack totals don’t immediately reflect his impact.
Offensive Line Depth: A Hidden Concern
The offensive line’s injury history is a quieter but critical concern. Forness notes that starters like Ryan Kelly, Christian Darrisaw, and Brian O’Neill have missed games in the past, and backup plans remain unclear.
“I’m really intrigued to see what happens to the Vikings when somebody gets hurt on the offensive line,” Forness says. “Who’s gonna be the backup center? Are they gonna trust Michael Jurgens?”
Training camp will offer clues about the depth chart, with players like Justin Skule at tackle and who’ll backup Kelly. Kelly’s injury history makes the center position a particular worry, and Forness expects challenges that could test the team’s resilience.
J.J. McCarthy’s Development: Easing Him In
Quarterback J.J. McCarthy is central to the Vikings’ long-term vision, and Forness emphasizes the team’s strategy to protect him early on. The competitive rebuild has surrounded McCarthy with talent, reducing the need for him to carry the offense immediately.
“They’re gonna try everything to make sure McCarthy does not have to play stressful quarterback initially,” Forness explains. “The ultimate goal is he’s just a quarterback that does all the normal quarterback things, puts a team on his back when he has to.”
A strong run game, led by Aaron Jones, Jordan Mason, and Ty Chandler, and reliable targets like Justin Jefferson, Addison, and T.J. Hockenson, will ease McCarthy’s transition. Forness believes this approach will allow McCarthy to grow without overwhelming pressure, setting the stage for future success.
