2nd Half Storylines for the Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Pistons take a 4 game winning streak where they have defeated their opponents an average of 20 points per game. This puts them at 29-26, which is good for 6th in the Easter Conference with a 2.5 game cushion over the Orlando Magic. Detroit is 1 game behind the Milwaukee Bucks, and just two games behind Indiana for the 4 spot. This is the first time the Pistons have taken an above .500 record into the All-Star break since 2009.

Supporting Cast

Malik Beasley and Tobias Harris have settled in as consistent vets to compliment the All-star performances of Cade Cunningham, but the emergence of Jalen Duren and Ausar have been pivotal in the recent winning streak. Most notably is their role as playmakers. Since the 76ers game on February 7th where Cade sat out with a sore ankle, Thompson has upped his aggression, and taken a bigger role facilitating. In the month of February he is averaging 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assist, shooting nearly 70% from the field. Duren has been a consistent double double threat, and is averaging 5.5 assist in his last 4 games.

Floor General off the Bench

Dennis Schroder is done a good job of stabilizing the second unit, and has even knocked down some big shots during the fourth quarter to secure leads. The Pistons are 4-0 since completing the trade for Schroder. With that being said, it hasn’t been all roses for Dennis. Schroeder is shooting a respectable 37% from the behind the arc, but overall he is shooting just 26% from the field. Schroder has been a good creator in his short time with the team, but he will be a much larger threat if he can shoot more efficiently.

The Pistons have 29 games remaining including 3 of the next 5 against NBA elite (LA Clippers, Boston Celtics, and the Denver Nuggets. Detroit have struggled against their own division, going into this final stretch they are 4-9 versus the Central. The Pistons are currently outside the threshold of having to play a play-in game to secure their spot and ideally would like to continue to ascend higher within the conference. And given their upcoming road they’ll have a pretty good chance of doing so. They have the 6th easiest schedule down the stretch. Detroit has 3 games remaining vs. the Central, which may prove to be very impactful ones. They have one game left against Cleveland, and a home and home vs. Milwaukee to close out the regular season.
