WWE-AAA Worlds Collide: Bringing Lucha Libre Wrestling to the USA
WWE kicked off its partnership with Mexico’s No. 2 promotion, AAA, at the Worlds Collide show on Saturday in Los Angeles.
Just as WCW teamed with AAA for Worlds Collide in 1994, this show was meant to introduce Lucha Libre to a new generation of American fans.
In the main event, El Hijo del Vikingo defeated Chad Gable to retain the AAA Mega championship. Vikingo delivered a mind-blowing 630 splash off the top rope for the victory.
“All Ego” Ethan Page retained the NXT North American championship in a four-way match over Rey Fenix, Je’Von Evans, and Laredo Kid.
Page hit the Twisted Grin cutter on Laredo Kid to win the match.
Stephanie Vaquer teamed with NXT wrestler Lola Vice to defeat the AAA team of Chik Tormenta & Dalys.
Vaquer pinned Dalys after the SVB backbreaker.
TRADITIONAL LUCHA
Of course, no Lucha Libre show would be complete without a couple of high-flying six-man matches.
Santos Escobar, Angel & Berto (Legado del Fantasma) defeated Psycho Clown, Pagano & El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr.
Escobar pinned Wagner after a Phantom Driver.
Octagon Jr., Aero Star & Mr. Iguana defeated Lince Dorado, Cruz del Toro & Dragon Lee.
Octagon Jr., whose father competed at the original Worlds Collide show, pinned Dorado after a moonsault fallaway slam. Mr. Iguana had an iguana doll named La Yesca in his corner.
After the bout, Octagon accepted a challenge to face Intercontinental champion Dominik Mysterio a few hours later at Money in the Bank.
