Wings Trade DiJonai Carrington To Lynx For Diamond Miller And Karlie Samuelson

Over recent weeks, Wings forward DiJonai Carrington seemed to be one of the team’s most prominent trade candidates ahead of next Thursday’s Trade Deadline.

Sunday morning, that fruition became a reality as Dallas sent Carrington to the Minnesota Lynx in exchange for third-year forward Diamond Miller, seventh-year guard Karlie Samuelson, and Minnesota’s 2027 WNBA Draft Second Round pick.

To complete the trade, the Wings waived Teaira McCowan, who was in her fourth season in Dallas but never found a consistent role within first-year head coach Chris Koclanes’ system.

Carrington’s tenure in Dallas didn’t go as planned after she was acquired from the Connecticut Sun in a four-team trade in February. In 20 games, she averaged 10.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.1 steals.

This off-season, Carrington will be an unrestricted free agent, likely a big reason Dallas chose to move on from her now.

McCowan will also be a free agent at season’s end, but has appeared in just 17 games, averaging 5.6 points and 4.6 rebounds while shooting .537 from the field. Multiple times this season, she has not played due to coach’s decision.

As for what the Wings are getting back in the trade, Miller, the No. 2 overall pick by the Lynx in the 2023 WNBA Draft, is the headliner.

In her rookie year, Miller garnered WNBA All-Rookie Team honors after finishing second in scoring (12.1 ppg), fifth in rebounding (3.5 rpg), and second in assists (2.5 apg) among all newcomers.

Since then, Miller has struggled to secure consistent playing time with the Lynx team, which reached the finals last season and currently sits at the top of the league.

The Wings hope that with increased minutes, Miller will return to her rookie form and some as she sits more than a year away from restricted free agency.

Samuelson has played just 16 games this season due to a foot injury that will keep her sidelined for the rest of the season.

Before the injury, Samuelson averaged 5.3 points and 2.0 rebounds per night. She will be an unrestricted free agent at season’s end.
