Will the Washington Commanders Extend Terry McLaurin this Offseason?
Terry McLaurin has one year left on his contract with the Washington Commanders.
This means that he is up for an extension and it comes at a good time for the 29-year-old wide receiver.
McLaurin has been a No. 1 receiver in Washington for six years now since being drafted in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. As a rookie, McLaurin totaled 919 receiving yards and a career-best 15.8 yards per reception. This was the only season in his career where he did not eclipse 1,000 yards.
Last year, McLaurin reaped the benefits of having a franchise quarterback. With Jayden Daniels under center, McLaurin totaled 82 catches for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns, which is the most in franchise history by a wide receiver.
McLaurin is up for an contract extension and while there have been recent roadblocks in the deal, it is hard to imagine both sides do not get this deal done.
Washington General Manager Adam Peters has discussed the importance of maximizing the roster while Daniels is on his rookie contract. That is the benefit of having a quarterback break out as a rookie. The Commanders went out and made trades for Deebo Samuel and Laremy Tunsil. These are win-now moves from Washington, who still holds plenty of cap space to get this deal done.
The Commanders have also been handing out many one-year deals in free agency to veteran players that can help the team win. This leaves flexibility for Peters and the rest of the front office each year.
There have been very few leaks coming out of D.C. since Peters and Dan Quinn took over. Now, there are reports coming out that McLaurin is unhappy with negotiations. This is a difficult sell that this would come out of the building. If McLaurin’s agent is looking for more guaranteed money, it could happen moving forward.
Peters has expressed interest in bringing back McLaurin while the receiver himself has not shown a willingness to leave — especially with Daniels in place.
After a trip to the NFC Championship Game with a rookie quarterback, Washington is set up for success right away in 2025-26. The front office will not want to move forward without their No. 1 wide receiver.
