Wild Pitch Leads to Extra-Inning Loss for Cleveland Guardians
Cleveland Guardians fans must be longing for a few games against the Chicago White Sox.
Their favorite team always seems to face a dominant starter (Tarik Skubal, Max Fried), a lights-out closer (Josh Hader), or a power-packed lineup (New York Yankees).
For that reason, the Guardians have little margin for error. A wild pitch in the 10th inning led to a 5-3 loss to the Houston Astros on Saturday at Progressive Field.
Neither team could score in the first four innings, just like in Friday’s game. Gavin Williams matched zeroes on the mound with Houston ace Hunter Brown.
The Astros scored in the fifth inning when Jeremy Pena’s infield single scored Yainer Diaz.
Houston pumped up the lead to 3-0 in the sixth inning when Diaz hit a two-run homer to left field.
THE COMEBACK
Gabriel Arias finally put the Guardians on the board with a single to score Ramirez in the sixth.
Using the Astros’ exact formula, Ramirez hit a two-run homer in the next inning to tie the game at 3-3.
Next, the bullpens took over. Cade Smith and Emmanuel Clase kept the Astros off the board, while Hader did the same for Houston.
In the 10th, Cleveland reliever Hunter Gaddis threw a wild pitch that scored Jake Meyers with the go-ahead run for the Astros.
Isaac Paredes added an RBI single for Houston’s winning margin.
The Guardians will try to break a three-game losing streak today at 1:40 p.m. on the MLB Network. Tanner Bibee (4-6) will start for Cleveland against Houston lefty Brandon Walter (0-0).
