Where’s Josh? Cleveland Guardians Beat Naylor-Less Arizona Diamondbacks
After trading Josh Naylor to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the offseason, the Cleveland Guardians were scheduled to visit him for the first time last night in Phoenix.
One small problem: Naylor got traded again!
Before the July 31 deadline, the Diamondbacks raised the white flag by trading Naylor and National League home run leader Eugenio Suarez to the Seattle Mariners in separate deals.
So last night, Gavin Williams and four relievers led the Guardians to a 3-1 win over the punchless Snakes.
BIG RIG KEEPS ROLLIN’
Williams pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings, giving up four hits and a walk while striking out five. He improved his record to 8-4 with a 3.24 ERA.
It’s safe to say that Williams, not Tanner Bibee, is the ace of the starting rotation.
Erik Sabrowski and Matt Festa retired two batters each, and Hunter Gaddis took care of the eighth inning.
Cade Smith picked up his seventh save, despite giving up an RBI triple to Geraldo Perdomo in the ninth inning.
UNEXPECTED POWER
Cleveland got all three of its runs on homers from the bottom third of the batting order.
CJ Kayfus smashed a 406-foot homer off Zac Gallen in the second inning to give Cleveland a 1-0 lead.
Brayan Rocchio added a two-run homer off Gallen in the fifth. It was only Rocchio’s third homer of the year, but it was his second in three days.
Game 2 of the series will start tonight at 9:40 Eastern on the MLB Network.
Bibee (9-9, 4.54) will take the mound for the Guardians against Arizona’s Eduardo Rodriguez (5-7, 5.40).
