What Can The Texans Expect From Nick Chubb?
On Sunday night, it was reported that the Houston Texans and RB Nick Chubb are expected to reach an agreement on a one-year contract. On Monday the move was completed, with Chubb signing a one-year deal worth up to $5 million dollars.
During April’s NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns, Chubb’s now former team, selected a pair of running backs, indicating that they were moving in a different direction at the position.
After being drafted in the 2nd Round out of Georgia back in 2018, Chubb produced one of the most productive tenures by a Cleveland running back ever.
Chubb rushed for 6,843 yards in seven seasons with the Browns, accumulating four consecutive Pro Bowl seasons from 2019-2022.
However, Chubb’s Browns career was derailed by injuries, as a knee injury and broken foot limited him to just eight games in 2024 and ultimately cost him his tenure in Cleveland.
Now, Chubb will get a fresh start with a Texans team that has won a playoff game in each of the last two seasons.
Chubb will now join a running back room that features Joe Mixon as a strong number one, but after that has a seemingly open hole at the number two back spot.
After bursting onto the scene in 2022 as a rookie Texans running back, Dameon Pierce hasn’t grasped onto a top-two back position under head coach DeMeco Ryans like Houston had expected.
That prompted the Texans to sift into the running back market, ultimately landing on Chubb after his fallout with the Browns.
To expect Chubb to return to Pro Bowl form certainly isn’t in Houston’s plans. Knowing what Chubb has done in the past, that’s not something impossible, but certainly not expected.
First and foremost, the Texans’ main hope is that Chubb can just stay on the field, something he hasn’t done in the last few seasons.
If he can do that, Houston feels like he can pair up with Joe Mixon as a guy who can be effective in short-yardage situations and on third down.
Last season, the Texans were just a middle-of-the-pack team when it comes to rushing, and they believe that Chubb can help change that.
Changing that narrative will also significantly help star third-year QB CJ Stroud, who was hit as much as nearly any other QB in the NFL last season.
At the end of the day, Chubb is a hard-nosed football player, something that Ryans and his staff pride themselves on.
The Texans hope that Chubb can be a key piece on a team they see making it to the AFC Championship Game or beyond for the first time in franchise history.
