Welcome to Sacramento: Wandering Athletics Beat Cleveland Guardians 5-1
The Athletics are the “Where’s Waldo” of the baseball world.
Debuting in 1901, the A’s won five World Series championships from 1910 to 1930.
They moved to Kansas City in 1955 and continued westward to Oakland, Calif., in 1968.
The “Swingin’ A’s” won three championships in a row in the early 1970s. They were also famous for the power hitting of the Bash Brothers (Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire) in the late ‘80s.
Oakland is in their rear-view mirror, but their new home in Las Vegas isn’t ready yet. So, they welcomed the Cleveland Guardians last night at Sutter Health Park, their temporary home in California’s capital city of Sacramento.
LET’S GO ALL THE WAY
The A’s won 5-1. Tanner Bibee (4-7) pitched an eight-inning “complete game” for Cleveland, giving up 11 hits and four earned runs.
To his credit, Bibee didn’t walk a batter and struck out 10.
Rookie first baseman Nick Kurtz homered for the third game in a row to give the A’s a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Bibee found himself in a bases-loaded jam in the second inning. Lawrence Butler singled to increase the Athletics’ advantage to 3-0.
Rookie of the Year contender Jacob Wilson added an RBI single in the seventh.
HELLO, CLEVELAND?
What about the Guardians’ offense? Cleveland only mustered four hits off Sacramento starter Jeffrey Springs (6-5) and two relievers.
Angel Martinez bashed a home run to left-center field for Cleveland’s only run.
Luis Urias drove in the Athletics’ final run with a single in the eighth inning.
Game 2 is another late-night battle starting at 10:05 Eastern. Logan Allen (5-4) will start for Cleveland against the Athletics’ Mitch Spence (2-1).
