A Quarter Century of Vikings Greatness
The Minnesota Vikings have been a rollercoaster of talent and heartbreak over the first 25 years of the 21st century. On The Real Forno Show, hosted by Tyler Forness with producer Dave Stefano, the duo takes on the challenge of constructing the ultimate Vikings roster from 2000 to 2025. This episode, part of the Vikings 1st & SKOL production and partnered with the Fans First Sports Network, sparks a passionate debate about who deserves a spot on this elite team. With names like Daunte Culpepper, Adrian Peterson, and Justin Jefferson in the mix, the discussion is as nostalgic as it is analytical, offering fans in Minneapolis and beyond a deep dive into Vikings history.
Tyler sets the stage: âWho makes the Minnesota Vikings quarter century team? Last week, ESPN stirred up a lot of Vikings fans by not even considering with any serious thought, Adrian Peterson being on the NFL quarter century team when heâs one of two running backs in this century that have won a Most Valuable Player award.â
The Quarter Century Team Concept
Tyler Forness, a Vikings reporter for A to Z Sports and a contributor to SKOR Northâs Purple Daily, approaches the roster with a strategic mindset, building a team that could theoretically compete in a game. He opts for a 12 or 21 personnel offense, emphasizing versatility with a flex player on both offense and defense. Defensively, he prioritizes a nickel package, reflecting the Vikingsâ frequent use of this formation over the past 25 years. Special teams include a kicker, punter, long snapper, special teamer, kick returner, and punt returner.
Dave Stefano, the showâs producer, takes a slightly different tack, focusing on the best players at each position since 2000 without strict personnel constraints. âI just went and looked at the best positions since 2000 who played where,â Dave explains, noting that he groups defensive ends and edge rushers together and considers linebackers as inside players.
Offense: A Star-Studded Lineup
Quarterback: Daunte Culpepperâs Unquestionable Reign
The quarterback debate is a highlight, with Tyler and Dave both crowning Daunte Culpepper as the top choice. Tyler passionately defends Culpepperâs legacy: âIf Culpepper wasnât great, the Vikings were going nowhere. And to me that stands out above the rest⊠Weâd be talking about him in the same realm as Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson.â
Culpepperâs 2004 season, where he threw 39 touchdowns and broke NFL records, is a focal point, overshadowed only by Peyton Manningâs 49-touchdown campaign. Dave agrees but includes Brett Favreâs 2009 NFC Championship run and Kirk Cousins in his list, though he acknowledges Cousinsâ stats were inflated by garbage time. The nod to J.J. McCarthy as a potential future star elicits a chuckle, with Dave quipping, âHeâll be [on] the first half-century team.â
Running Back: Adrian Peterson and Jim Kleinsasserâs Versatility
Adrian Peterson is a no-brainer at running back, with Tyler calling ESPNâs omission of him from their NFL quarter century team âan abomination.â Petersonâs MVP award, 2,000-yard season, and seven Pro Bowls cement his status. âAdrian Peterson carried an entire franchise to the playoffs on his back,â Tyler emphasizes.
At fullback, Jim Kleinsasser earns the spot for his multi-positional prowess. Tyler likens him to modern-day Josh Oliver: âThis was a hockey player that played football.â Dave concurs, noting, âJimmy was making my squad no matter what⊠He was all the way up through 2011.â Kleinsasserâs franchise tag in 2005 underscores his value.
Wide Receiver: Moss, Jefferson, and Harvinâs Explosive Trio
The wide receiver corps is a Vikings strength, with Randy Moss and Justin Jefferson as automatic selections. Tyler adds Percy Harvin as his flex player, citing his MVP candidacy in 2012 before injuries and a fallout with coach Brad Childress derailed his tenure. âHarvin was special⊠He was built different,â Tyler asserts.
Dave lists Stefon Diggs, Cris Carter, and Adam Thielen as alternatives but agrees on Moss and Jefferson as starters. Carterâs inclusion is debated due to his limited 2000-2001 stint, with Tyler arguing, âI donât think those two years were good enough to merit consideration.â
Tight End: Kyle Rudolphâs Steady Presence
Tight end is the rosterâs weakest link, with Kyle Rudolph earning the nod for his consistent, if unspectacular, career. âHe was a mattress with legs for quarterbacks,â Dave humorously notes, praising Rudolphâs reliability. T.J. Hockenson is acknowledged as a superior talent, but his shorter Vikings tenure keeps him as a secondary option. Tyler predicts, âIf we revisit this in two to three years, weâll have a completely different answer.â
Offensive Line: Anchored by Hutchinson and Birk
The offensive line features Bryant McKinnie (LT), Steve Hutchinson (LG), Matt Birk (C), David Dixon (RG), and Brian OâNeill (RT). Hutchinson and Birk are unquestioned, with Tyler noting, âMatt Birk at center was no question.â Dave swaps McKinnie for Christian Darrisaw, citing his potential, but agrees on Dixon over Anthony Herrera. The lineâs inconsistency over the years is a recurring theme, with Tyler remarking, âItâs interesting how weird this offensive line has been for the Vikings.â
Defense: A Formidable Unit
Defensive Line: The Williams Wall and Jared Allen
The defensive line is a Vikings stronghold, led by Jared Allen and Kevin Williams. âJared Allen is being inducted into the Hall of Fame this summer. Kevin Williams should get his place in Canton sooner rather than later,â Tyler states. He selects Everson Griffen and Pat Williams to round out the starters, with Danielle Hunter as the defensive flex.
Dave prioritizes Hunter over Griffen and chooses Linval Joseph over Pat Williams, explaining, âI put Linval as being more important to the defense at the time.â The Williams Wallâs chemistry sways Tyler, but he acknowledges, âIâm not gonna fight anybody that puts Linval over Pat Williams.â
Linebacker: Barr and Kendricks in Nickel
In a nickel defense, Tyler picks Anthony Barr and Eric Kendricks, praising Barrâs disruptive presence: âHe created so many nightmares for opposing offensive coordinators.â Dave opts for Chad Greenway as his top linebacker, citing his versatility and sacks, but includes Kendricks and Barr. EJ Henderson gets a nod for his early-2000s contributions.
Cornerback: Winfieldâs Dominance, Rhodesâ Peak
Antoine Winfield is the cornerstone at cornerback, with Tyler calling him âa slam dunk, no questions asked.â Xavier Rhodesâ peak seasons earn him a spot, while Cedric Griffin edges out others due to limited depth. Dave selects Patrick Peterson over Griffin, noting, âHe was still very impressive.â The Vikingsâ struggles at corner, with names like Chris Cook and Trae Waynes falling short, highlight the positionâs challenges.
Safety: Harrison Smith and the Sharper Dilemma
Harrison Smith is an undisputed choice at safety, but the second spot sparks debate. Both Tyler and Dave exclude Darren Sharper due to his off-field issues, with Tyler stating, âI used it as a disqualifier and Iâm okay with that.â Tyler chooses Corey Chavous for his 2003 Pro Bowl season, while Dave picks Robert Griffith for his 2000 Pro Bowl. âI thought Robert Griffith was a good, strong safety for us,â Dave says.
Special Teams: Pattersonâs Historic Returns
Special teams feature Blair Walsh (kicker), Chris Kluwe (punter), Andrew DePaola (long snapper), Heath Farwell (special teamer), Cordarrelle Patterson (kick returner), and Marcus Sherels (punt returner). Tyler defends Walsh despite his late-career struggles: âNot a single player peaked higher.â Dave prefers Ryan Longwellâs steadiness, but both agree on Kluwe and DePaola.
Pattersonâs kick return dominance is unrivaled, with Tyler noting, âCordarrelle Patterson is the best kick returner to ever play in the National Football League.â Sherelsâ five punt return touchdowns over a decade secure his spot.
Could This Team Win a Super Bowl?
The episode concludes with Tylerâs bold claim: âI do think the team that I have is pretty damn good⊠worthy of potentially making a Super Bowl.â The rosterâs balance of offensive firepower, defensive stalwarts, and special teams excellence supports his optimism. Daveâs broader selections add depth, suggesting a team capable of competing at the highest level.
