UPDATE: Nico Hoerner Had The Most Polite Ejection In History
I know, I know; I’ve been on a bit of a “Nico Hoerner kick” as of late. Ever since the Cubs’ second baseman was wrongfully ejected from Sunday’s match-up against the Detroit Tigers, I just haven’t been able to get my mind off of that moment. I just haven’t been able to stop thinking about the BLATANT display of injustice that was set forth by Home Plate Umpire Derek Thomas at Comerica Park.
It was egregious, it was asinine, and after hearing the audio from the altercation…..I seriously think that someone in the ivory towers of Major League Baseball needs to look into this matter.
That was the most polite ejection I’ve ever seen. I still can’t get over it! #Cubs #BeHereForIt pic.twitter.com/8FpHTPHdFI

That, ladies and gentlemen…..that had to be the most polite ejection that I have ever seen in my entire life. There was no yelling. There was no cussing. There were no comical arm movements that made it look like Nico Hoerner was trying to take flight. It was just a simple comment about the ump’s performance in that particular game.
“You’re having a really bad day so far.” It was a simple, and a very polite piece of feedback, about the official’s performance this past Sunday. It was a comment that you would probably see on a “comment card” from a very sweet elderly woman who goes to church. But for SOME REASON, the ump had to take offense to it. For SOME REASON, the ump couldn’t handle a bit of “criticism” when it came to his horrible calls.
It was a terrible display of someone becoming too “power hungry” in the moment, and it just leads back to my argument about robot-umps that I made in my previous article. Sure, it would be nice to have accurate calls every single pitch. Sure, it would be nice to not have to deal with umps who are softer than Charmin (like Derek Thomas). But to get rid of the “human element,” which is what this game was built on? It just feels a bit boring and bland, when you think about it.
It’s a tough rope to walk, and an argument that has the old fans and the new fans of the sport split down the middle. But one thing is for certain; it’s going to keep getting HARDER to argue against the bots, if the Derek Thomas’ of the world keep pulling these kinds of shenanigans. Nico Hoerner is a saint, but he was treated like he committed a crime in Detroit!
Fix this, MLB. But in the end, as always…..what do I know? I’m just a guy from the Midwest, with a beer and a laptop, trying to make sense of this world.
