Trade Deadline Candidate: Bo Bichette

With Detroit emerging as a serious World Series contender with question posed is who can help them solidify their legitimacy as the season progresses. The hot name that has been circulated is young Shortstop and 2-time All-star Bo Bichette of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Bichette has had a nice bounce back season after an injury ladened 2024. He finished last season with a negative WAR value, by far his worst season since he debuted in 2019. Bichette has been  the bright spot in a disappointing start to a season despite the free agent signings of Anthony Santander, Jeff Hoffman, and trade acquisition Andres Gimenez.

Bichette has been a highly effective contact hitter at the top of the order. He’s done an excellent job of squaring up pitches making consistent hard contact. All while limiting his swing and misses. His expected statistics on bat to ball contact are just a shade below the 90 percentile mark.

Bichette would provide a solidified bat that strengthens an already formidable lineup. He has an impressive slash line of .397/.425/.683/1.117 with runner’s in scoring position. A contribution of that level of efficiency would aid a team that has had it’s fair share of lapses in that type of scenario. His gap to gap power would play well in spacious Comerica Park.

As far as his role in Detroit, they could plug him in as the everyday shortstop and move Javier Baez over to 3rd, where he has proven to be effective. With that being said, in reality Baez is the better defensive option at short, so if Bichette was willing to make the transition they could fully maximize Javy’s value. Matt Vierling would have been a viable short-term option at third base but he has struggled all year with a bad shoulder.

Bichette is going into the final year of his deal, and the contract extension negotiations appearing to be severed it shouldn’t take a life-changing amount to obtain him. Possibly one starter they can plug in and play immediately, and a middle of the road prospect to throw in. The name that has been thrown around is Tiger’s Shortstop Trey Sweeney who was acquired last year in the Jack Flaherty deal. Sweeney has been underwhelming this year, both at the plate and in the field but at 25 years old, he still has the potential to be an above average everyday player. Given Bichette’s resurgence this year he will be seeking a major extension at the end of the season, and at his age of 27, it may be something worth entertaining long term on the left side of the infield somewhere. Bichette currently has 8 homers and 37 RBIs. Good for a slash line of .278/.323/.440/.763.
