TINFOIL HAT TIME: Mavericks End Up With The #1 Pick?
Break out the Tin Foil, and keep an eye on the stars; it’s time to talk about conspiracy theories. And today…..we are focusing on the craziness that is the 2024-2025 Dallas Mavericks. We are focusing on the questionable actions of General Manager Nico Harrison this season, that have subsequently lead to him winning the biggest prize in the league today.

That’s right; the team with one of the LOWEST probabilities to win the lottery ended up coming out ahead. The organization that has been through the most turmoil and negativity this season, just landed the most coveted prize in all of sports; Duke Blue Devils big-man Cooper Flagg;

It’s an amazing moment for the fans, and the city of Dallas as a whole. This team, who is just coming off of an appearance in the NBA Finals last year, just secured the most highly-touted prospect in recent memory. They have a face to build around for years to come, and someone that they can pair with Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis.
This comes months after the organization traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers; one of the greatest players their organization has ever seen, and the most dynamic scorer in the league today. It was a trade that shook the very core of the National Basketball Association; sending Doncic Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris to LA, in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first rounder.
It was something that turned Nico Harrison into enemy #1 in this league. But some how, some way…….he ended up turning it into a positive for this organization. Some how, some way…….the ping pong balls rolled in his favor, and helped him make up for the ATROCITY that was the Luka deal.
But……why does this whole situation seem so “skeevy?” Why does the thought of the Mavs having the #1 overall pick make me feel so dirty? Is it because I’m pissed that it’s not my team (the Chicago Bulls), and that we are stuck with YET ANOTHER ‘middle of the road’ pick at #12? Possibly.
In reality…..it’s much more than that. (This is the part where you should put the Tin Foil on). There is more than meets the eye with Dallas getting the top pick. I mean, just think about it; isn’t it “odd” that the most monumental trade of the year, which sent one of the leagues best players to a larger market in LA, was kept on the “hush-hush” for so long? Not only that; isn’t it “odd” that that same team who traded away one of the leagues best players was basically “compensated” with the #1 overall pick, EVEN THOUGH they only had 1.8% chance of obtaining said pick?
It just does not add up here, folks! Granted, this is all “alleged,” because I obviously have no proof that this was going on behind the scenes. But it just…..it just all smells fishy, and I’m not a big fan of fishy.
This development is going to make the draft, and next season, even more intriguing to watch. But was that Adam Silver’s plan all along? (Wink wink, nudge nudge). Who knows? In the end though, as always…..what do I know? I’m just a guy from the Midwest, with a beer and a laptop, trying to make sense of this world.
