The Speedway Classic Was A Gigantic Dumpster Fire
There are some things in this world that just SCREAM “America.” Whether it’s slamming beers (responsibly) during the Fourth of July, or watching a professional wrestling match in the middle of a Wal-Mart; we here in the great U.S. of A. have created a culture that stands out like a black cat in the middle of a snowstorm.
We have a one-of-a-kind way of living, and this past weekend…..we added another gem of an event to our red, white and blue calendar. Ladies and Gentlemen…..the SPEEDWAY CLASSIC!
MLB Speedway Classic official attendance: 91,032
Officially the most attended game in MLB History

Yep, that’s right; someone high up at the Major League Baseball headquarters thought it would be a good idea to put a baseball field in the middle of one of the most storied racetracks that our country has to offer. They thought it would be an amazing gimmick that could turn into a yearly tradition for America’s Greatest Past Time!
NEWSFLASH, it was NOT! It was a good idea on paper, I’ll give them that. But in practice? It ended up being one of the biggest failures in the history of professional sports.
It was a CATASTROPHE of epic proportions, with fans all across the track facing problems at some point during their stay. For starters; the rain-out was complete chaos. Sure, you can’t really knock the league too hard for that, since they can’t control the weather. But from a visual/gameplay perspective…..it just looked like a complete disaster!

But not only that, there was also the fact that some fans seats were LIGHT YEARS away from the field itself.
Some of seats for the Speedway Classic are far away from the action to say the least…

And to top it all off, the concession stands reportedly RAN OUT OF FOOD before the game even began. There was actually one point where the track ended up serving patrons wrapped up hot dogs without buns, and nachos without cheese.

It was, according to literally EVERYONE that was there this past weekend, one of the worst logistical nightmares ever. It was the “MLB’s version of Fyre Fest,” which is a phrase that was coined by MANY fans who were interviewed after the game. The league, the track, and everyone involved in organizing this event failed the fans on SO MANY LEVELS…..and they’re probably going to do it again next year.
Don’t ask me why, don’t ask me how. I just have a gut feeling that Rob Manfred and his happy pack of “yes men” are going to find a way to give us the “Speedway Classic 2.” It just feels like something that the league wants a “do-over” on, and if that’s the case…..fans shouldn’t even bother attending. Go somewhere that was actually made for baseball.
But in the end, as always…..what do I know? I’m just a guy from the Midwest, with a beer and a laptop, trying to make sense of this world.
