The First Ever Speedway Classic Suspended Until 1PM EST
The Speedway Classic. That is, without question, one of the most creative games in the history of Major League Baseball. For the first time ever, the MLB was set to hold a game between the Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds INSIDE of a professional racetrack; Bristol Motor Speedway.
This entire idea had all of the majesty and flair that you could ask for, with a reported 85,000 fans seated in the stands for this one-of-a-kind event. But sadly….

The entire moment was rained out before it really got started. This game wasn’t even able to get through a full inning before Mother Nature started to rain all over their parade. It was a scene that really……was almost comical, if you think about it. All of this build up? All of this grandeur? And for what……a rain out?
Thankfully though, for the fans in attendance…..there was a bit of action before the game was eventually called. In the bottom of the first inning at Bristol, Cincinnati Reds DH/LF Austin Hays was able to smack a single into left field, bringing in Matt McLain to score the lone run of the short outing.

But sadly, that was the only action that fans would end up seeing on the WET and SOGGY fake field.
Today though, the Atlanta and Cincinnati faithful will hopefully get to see the conclusion of this contest, as both teams are set to continue this match-up at 1PM EST. The problem for me? There’s no Strider, no Acuña, AND the Braves really have nothing to play for. If anything…..this game is really just a glorified circus act, with a gimmick.
Hopefully some fans will find joy from today. But in the end, as always…..what do I know? I’m just a guy from the Midwest, with a beer and a laptop, trying to make sense of this world.
