The New Cleveland Browns Quarterback Dilemma
For months Browns fans were told their favorite team needed a quarterback. They had to find a franchise quarterback either in free agency or the draft. Never mind the free agent quarterbacks were average or old. Never mind this year’s draft class was average at best. The media was placing every available and sometimes unavailable signal caller in Cleveland. The journey started with the unavailable Kirk Cousins, then moved through Sam Darnold, Russell Wilson and finally Joe Flacco. As for the NFL draft, the team had to trade up for Cam Ward, even though the Titans weren’t going to trade the pick. Then the plan was to draft Shedeur Sanders at two. After that, the plan was to draft Travis Hunter at two and trade back up into the first round and take Sanders. The next plan was to take Hunter at two and draft Jalen Milroe at 33. If that wasn’t going to work, draft Kyle McCord or Will Howard on day three. The reason for all these different situations is because of the large divide between what the “so-called” experts think they know and what is actually on an NFL team’s draft board.
The Cleveland media invested in this circus and convinced Browns fans the team had to keep drafting quarterbacks until they get it right. They also falsely reported that in the past head coach Kevin Stefanski had no input. It was the mysterious Paul DePodesta or owner Jimmy Haslam who helped make the picks. “Find me my quarterback” a local Cleveland radio personality would scream every day. They demanded Browns GM Andrew Berry get this right. He had to let Kevin Stefanski find his quarterback. This same personality also wanted the team to draft two quarterbacks this year. Keep picking until you get it right. Everything changed at pick 94.
Browns fans had no idea how high Oregon QB Dillion Gabriel was on Cleveland’s draft board. They had no idea this was the quarterback Stefanski wanted. Since the draft, NFL personnel experts have given the Browns good marks on drafting Gabriel. The one complaint is his height. He’s the same height as Russell Wilson, an inch taller than Kyler Murray and an inch shorter than Baker Mayfield. His arm is stronger than Sanders, he’s just as accurate as Sanders, he good decisions and he’s played a lot of college football. I have no problem with the pick, just like I have no problem with the pick of Sanders at 144. Both are great values.
Now the local media is making a controversy over who’s going to be the starter. Is it Flacco, is it Pickett, is it one of the rookies. Can we get to training camp to decide. By the way, my opinion is Pickett will get the start, he was the first quarterback they acquired. To suggest the team has no plan at this juncture is stupid. I listened to the same Cleveland station for the last two days tell me the Browns have no plan at quarterback. This is the same station who demanded the GM draft two quarterbacks, the same station who demanded Stefanski get his choice and the same station who wanted Sanders since day one. All they’re doing is creating clicks and the fans eat it up. On Friday May 9, Browns rookies will report to Berea for the rookie training program and believe me the national media will be well represented with video and opinions. As will the local media. It’s going to be a crazy off-season Browns fans, buckle up.
