The Browns Finally Address The Safety Position

The one Cleveland roster position that has concerned me the most was the safety position. At the time the Browns only had two viable players with game experience one the roster, Grant Delpit and Ronnie Hickman. To add to my concern, Cleveland didn’t draft a safety this year. They did sign promising UDFA Donovan McMillon from Pitt, but if he makes the 2025 roster he’ll mostly be used on special teams. Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz primarily uses three safeties in his base defense. 2024 starters Rodney McLeod (retired) and Juan Thornhill (cut) are no longer on the team, so two veterans needed to be signed. Monday, the Browns filled those roster spots.

Damontae Kazee played the last three years with the Steelers. He was a fifth-round pick by the Atlanta Falcons out of San Diego State in 2017. After being drafted, he was moved to free safety exclusively. In 2018 he had his best season recording career highs in combined (82) and solo (60) tackles. He also had a career high with seven interceptions. He’s started 62 games and in his last three years with Pittsburg stated fourteen. For his career he’s had sixteen interceptions, 363 total tackles and seven forced fumbles. In a week 15 game against the Colts, he was suspended for a hit on wide receiver Michael Pittman which resulted in Kazee being suspended for the rest of the season. He was allowed to return for the playoffs. He will compete with Hickman for the free safety position

Rayshawn Jenkins played last year with Seattle after three years with Jacksonville. He was originally drafted in the fourth-round by the Chargers in 2017. Jenkins is very versatile playing 2164 snaps at strong safety, 2178 snaps at free safety and 869 snaps in the slot. He’s very good in coverage having only allowed six receiving touchdowns for his career. His best season was 2022 with the Jaguars. He had career highs in combined (116), solo (73) and assisted (43) tackles. He also that year had career highs in forced fumbles (3) and interceptions (3). For his career he has ten interceptions. He could easily start as the third safety taking over for McLeod.
