The Detroit Pistons have the best odds to land Cam Thomas
While the Brooklyn Nets and Cam Thomas appear to be in the midst of a contract dispute, the Pistons are the odds on favorites to sign him. Thomas’ 2024 season was cut short early with a right hamstring strain. In just 24 games he average 24 points 3 rebounds and 3 assist. Thomas is a high usage volume scorer who creates a lot of open opportunities for his teammates and gets to the line at a high frequency. On the other hand he is an utter defensive liability on the other end of the court in every metric you can think of. His defensive rating has gotten worst every year since he has entered the league.
If the Pistons were to sign him he provides a heavy offensive punch a viable creator running mate alongside Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey. Cam has been comfortable in the high usage role of creating his own scoring opportunities but an evolving part of his game has been his ability to spot up and knock down shots. Last year he converted 44% of his shots from downtown in spot up scenarios and increased his frequency of scoring on Catch and shoot form 10% to 15%. With other able-bodied creators around him he would have more opportunities to further unlock his shooting ability. Cam is also capable of attacking the closeout, get in the lane, and use his strong frame to absorb the contact for finishes at the rim.

Justifiably so, the signing may come as a head scratcher, with the current roster compilation consisting of scoring guards, but can you truly have enough scorers or your team? Last year Detroit was in desperate need of more creators, especially after the injury to Jaden Ivey. The biggest concern would be that the addition to Thomas, further weakens a an already suspect defensive unit off the bench. The open roster spot would probably best be filled with a player with more size that can protect the rim. With Jaden Ivey more than likely manning a lot of the backup point guard minutes when Cade is off the floor, the addition of Thomas pushes Duncan Robinson or Caris Levert out of the rotation. Two players who are amongst the most expensive on the team.
As of now Cam Thomas and Brooklyn are far off from long-term agreement . His estimated asking price hovers around $25-30 million, which nobody including Brooklyn are willing to budge on. The most likely scenario is that he signs the qualifying offer of $6 million and becomes an unrestricted Free Agnet next year. The Piston still possess their $14 million mid-level exception, but they would have to convince him to lock in on a 3 year deal. This is a bump from the $6 million but is still a fraction of what he feels he’s worth. Thomas is a young dynamiting scorer, who at 24 years of age fits the timeline of a young team looking to make another step towards playoff contention.
