The Cubs Officially Signed Former Guardian Carlos Santana

The Chicago Cubs have been struggling to score runs throughout the month of August. After starting the year as the hottest team in baseball, Craig Counsell’s bunch has only scored 101 runs since the start of the month; ranking 26th in the Majors. It was a sad tumble for a promising lineup. This team has been looking for something to turn their vibes around.

It has been a bit of a tumultuous journey, and it looks like Jed Hoyer and co. are trying to fix things……with Carlos Santana? (No, not the singer)

Santana, for those of you who don’t know, has played 16 seasons during his time in the league. In his almost two-decade long career, the 5’10” first baseman has played for seven different organizations; including the Guardians, Phillies, Royals, Mariners, Pirates, Brewers, and Twins. He has been primarily a “power guy” in the lineup, compiling a career stat-line consisting of;

7796 ABs, 1878 Hs, 335 HRs, 1134 RBIs, .241 BA, .426 SLG, .778 OPS

The Santo Domingo product was made available for the Cubs to sign after the Guardians let him go on August 28th. But the question that’s on everyone’s mind is…..how will this effect the North Siders the rest of the season?

Basically……Santana is going to offer a little more power and flexibility off the bench for the Cubs. With Owen Caissie, Willi Castro, and Justin Turner being the only primary backups who can play the field……this team doesn’t have a lot of “big bats” that can be plugged in at a moments notice. Santana (somewhat) fixes that. He is a switch-hitting big man who can relieve Michael Busch at first, which is a position on this team that doesn’t really have a lot of “depth” per se.

Simply put; he’s a cheap late-season add who has the ability to spice things up for a team that’s destined for a postseason run. Do I think he’s going to hit a crap ton of bombs by the end of the year? Probably not. But he will at least add an extra reliable bat for when Counsell’s in a pinch.

But what do I know? I’m just a guy from the Midwest, with a beer and a laptop, trying to make sense of this world.
