If you are not a fan of “super-utility men,” then you need to figure out what’s important in your life. “Super-utility men” in baseball are some of the most important players that any major league ball club can bring in, and that is certainly the case with former Minnesota Twin Willi Castro, who the Cubs just traded for prior to the 2025 MLB Trade Deadline.

The switch-hitting Castro, for those of you who are unaware, is a dream utility man for any team that needs depth off of the bench. The man can play (almost) anywhere on the field, with first and catcher being the only positions that he has not recorded playing time at in his career. Sure, shortstop is his “bread and butter.” But to have one guy that you can plug into any position in a pinch? That’s a positive if I’ve ever seen one.

His batting, on the other hand? Let’s just say that it’s very respectable, based on the fact that he’s not (or shouldn’t be) an every day presence for Craig Counsell’s bunch. In 86 games played for the Twins, the 28-year old from Puerto Rico has put up a stat-line that consists of;

.245 BA, 10 HR, 27 RBIs, .743 OPS

Nothing special, but very useful all at the same time. This team needed a little more help off of the bench; with the likes of old-man Justin Turner, Jon Berti, and the now DFA’d Vidal Brujan being three of the most consistent non-starters for this squad. They needed someone who could be multiple players in one, and they got just that with Willi.

Is he going to blow people away with his performance? Absolutely not! If anything, he’s just another strategic piece in the North Sider’s puzzle this season.

Hopefully this works out well for Jed Hoyer and co. But in the end…..what do I know? I’m just a guy from the Midwest, with a beer and a laptop, trying to make sense of this world.
