The 5 Worst NFL Head Coaches of the Last 10 Years

The NFL is the highest level of football in the world and needs the best leaders to serve as coaches of each of its 32 teams.

While looking for the right one, teams often find some duds along the way.

Over the last 10 years, there have been many duds that have led NFL teams into the abyss. There have been none worse than this list below.

Honorable Mention: Chip Kelly (San Francisco 49ers), Adam Gase (New York Jets), Todd Bowles (New York Jets), Freddie Kitchens (Cleveland Browns), Pat Shurmur (New York Giants)

5. Gus Bradley, Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars have been bad for quite some time now. During the Gus Bradley-era, the team was just irrelevant. He never won more than five games as head coach and finished 14-48 in four years. The fit never made sense and Bradley was unable to get anything out of his team on the sideline.

4. Urban Meyer, Jacksonville Jaguars

Jacksonville once again and this time, it was a bit of a gimmick and shot in the dark hire. With new quarterback Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville was hoping that Meyer’s greatness in college would translate. It was quite the opposite. Meyer was fired after just 13 games, going 2-11, and being mixed up in multiple controversial incidents.

3. Joe Judge, New York Giants

Joe Judge “won” the press conference and dove on a football in the mud in training camp. For some reason, this made the New York Giants believe they found their next, great head coach. But Joe Judge, really? He finished 10-23 in two years. He led New York to a 4-13 record in 2021. At the time, this was the most losses in franchise history for a head coach. Just watching the Giants in 2020-21 will show why Judge is in the top three here.

2. Matt Patricia, Detroit Lions

There have been many failures from the Bill Belichick coaching tree but Matt Patricia might be the worst of them all. This is a head coach that made the Detroit Lions, a dome team, practice outside for toughness. He went 9-22-1 in two years with the Lions. It was surprising that he was even given that second year. Patricia showed just an overall lack of leadership and control of the team.

1. Hue Jackson, Cleveland Browns

There might not be a worse coach in all of sports than Hue Jackson during his time with the Cleveland Browns. You talk about a guy who was not prepared and not fit to be an NFL head coach and the face of this is Jackson. Not only did he go 0-16 one of his two years, but the other featured a 15-loss team. Jackson led the Browns to a 1-31 record in two years. That is almost impossible to do. It is hard to discuss the worst coach in NFL history without Jackson being involved.
