Texas Turnaround: Cleveland Guardians Sweep First-Place Houston Astros

Just when the 2025 season seemed over, the Cleveland Guardians are showing signs of life.

Limping into Houston with a 10-game losing streak, the Guardians fired up and won all three games at Daikin Park.

Slade Cecconi (4-4) pitched seven strong innings in Wednesday night’s 4-2 victory.

He gave up five hits and two runs, walking two and striking out nine.

With Hunter Gaddis, Cade Smith, and Emmanuel Clase resting, the unsung heroes of the bullpen had to preserve the lead.

Jakob Junis handled the eighth, while Paul Sewald pitched the ninth for his second save as a Guardian.

Sewald used to be the closer for the Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks, so he now has 86 saves for his career.

DOUBLE DINGER

After sinking the Astros with a 10th-inning grand slam on Tuesday night, Angel Martinez sent another homer over the left field wall in the first inning. Jose Ramirez followed with his third homer in as many days.

Ramirez decided to drop out of the All-Star Game in order to rest up for the second half of the Guardians’ season.

Forget about Cooperstown … we need to nominate him for sainthood.

The back-to-back homers were Cleveland’s only two hits off Houston’s Brandon Walter in his six innings of work.

The Guardians increased the lead to 4-0 in the seventh. Johnathan Rodriguez hit a two-run single off lefty reliever Bennett Sousa.

Houston managed a pair of RBI doubles in the eighth by Mauricio Dubon and Jose Altuve before the bullpen finished the job.

GOING TO THE SOUTH SIDE

The Guardians (43-48) will try to keep the momentum going as they start a four-game series in Chicago against the White Sox (31-62).

Logan Allen (5-7) will start for Cleveland, while the Sox will go with Jonathan Cannon (3-7). First pitch is set for 7:40 p.m. Eastern.
