Tanner Bibee, Kyle Manzardo Lead Cleveland Guardians Past Chicago White Sox
Beating the Chicago White Sox isn’t a foregone conclusion, and it had to feel good for Tanner Bibee.
The Cleveland ace picked up his first win since late May as the Guardians beat the Sox 6-2 at Rate Field on Saturday.
Bibee (5-9) pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up six hits and two runs. That should be enough to win, and on this day, it was.
Erik Sabrowski bailed Bibee out of a sixth-inning jam and pitched a scoreless seventh. The lefty struck all out all four batters that he faced.
Cade Smith and Matt Festa pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth, respectively.
CELEBRATORY SOX
The White Sox celebrated the 20th anniversary of their World Series championship. Manager Ozzie Guillen was on hand, along with others from the 2005 team. White Sox fan Pope Leo XIV sent a signed jersey to team captain Paul Konerko.
Carlos Santana singled in the first inning to score Jose Ramirez.
Angel Martinez increased the lead to 2-0 in fourth with a sacrifice fly to score Santana.
The White Sox tied the game in the fourth on a two-run single by Kyle Teel.
Kyle Manzardo blasted a solo homer to right field off Jordan Leasure (2-5) to give Cleveland the lead for good.
Steven Kwan increased the advantage with a sacrifice fly in the seventh and an RBI single in the ninth.
Ramirez singled to score Kwan for the Guardians’ final run.
NEED A BREAK?
The Guardians will hit the All-Star break after today’s game against the White Sox.
Joey Cantillo will start for Cleveland, while former Guardian Aaron Civale (1-6) will throw the first pitch for the Sox at 2:10 p.m. Eastern time.
