Super Kwan: Cleveland Guardians Heroically Defeat Baltimore Orioles
Superman Night at Progressive Field ended perfectly, with the heroes winning in the end.
Steven Kwan’s eighth-inning single scored Bo Naylor with the go-ahead run in the Cleveland Guardians’ 3-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles.
Cleveland won its fourth game in a row. The Guardians are 11-2 since breaking their 10-game losing streak.
Not only are the Guardians back in the wild-card race, but they have cut the Detroit Tigers’ lead in the AL Central Division from 15½ games to eight.
The first 15,000 fans received a Metropolis Meteors T-shirt. Progressive Field was featured in the new “Superman” movie as the home field of the “Meteors.”
PINPOINT PITCHING
Slade Cecconi started for Cleveland against the Orioles’ Zach Eflin. Both pitchers held the opposition scoreless until the fourth inning.
All-Star Ryan O’Hearn gave Baltimore the lead with a sacrifice fly.
Kyle Manzardo put the Guardians on top 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth with a single to score Kwan and Jose Ramirez.
Jackson Holliday, the Orioles’ 21-year-old phenom, tied the game with his 14th homer of the season.
BULLPEN TIME
Nic Enright pitched a scoreless seventh inning. Hunter Gaddis (1-1) followed suit in the eighth.
After Kwan’s decisive hit, Emmanuel Clase struck out two in the ninth and picked up his 23rd save. Clase lowered his ERA to 2.74.
Somehow, Cleveland is winning games with only their first three hitters batting above .230.
