SummerSlam Flashback: The Megapowers Battle the Megabucks (1988)
The first SummerSlam in 1988 featured the fallout of the main event of WrestleMania IV.
That was the glorious day that Randy “Macho Man” Savage won the vacant World Wrestling Federation championship.
Savage won a 14-man tournament, defeating Ted DiBiase in the final match. Miss Elizabeth made the difference by fetching Hulk Hogan to counter the interference of Andre the Giant.
SummerSlam took place at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The main event was the Megapowers (Savage & Hogan) vs. the Megabucks (DiBiase & Andre).
Elizabeth was a key factor in this match, too. She distracted the heels by removing her skirt, allowing Hogan and Savage to hit their big moves and pin “The Million Dollar Man.”
WARRIOR GOES WILD
The Honky Tonk Man was the longest reigning Intercontinental champion with a title reign of more than 14 months.
His challenger, Brutus Beefcake, was injured by “Outlaw” Ron Bass, so Honky challenged “anybody” to face him.
“Anybody” turned out to be The Ultimate Warrior, who destroyed Honky in 27 seconds to win the championship.
DON’T MESS WITH THE SNAKE
“Ravishing” Rick Rude was wrestling Junkyard Dog when he revealed a second set of wrestling tights featuring Jake “The Snake” Roberts’ wife, Cheryl.
Roberts stormed the ring to attack Rude, causing JYD to get disqualified.
“The Snake” apologized, and he came back later in the show to beat Hercules.
Demolition defeated the Hart Foundation with help from the Harts’ former manager, Jimmy Hart.
Other SummerSlam results included:
· Big Bossman beat Koko B. Ware
· Dino Bravo pinned Don Muraco
· Bad News Brown defeated Ken Patera
· The Powers of Pain beat The Bolsheviks
· The British Bulldogs fought the Rougeau Brothers to a 20-minute draw
