Today in White Sox Baseball (April 29, 2025) — Colson gets sent to the desert, but A-ball brings the wins
Believe it or not, the White Sox held a lead in this game, courtesy of two first-inning homers. But, no spoiler here, they still lost. On the farm, just one affiliate lost, as Lucas Gordon continued to push for a promotion to Birmingham.
Milwaukee Brewers 7, Chicago White Sox 2 Real Major League Baseball teams don’t intentionally, couched around off-days, run out a bullpen game. The White Sox, who put six pitchers on the mound, none of whom were suited for bulk, are not a real Major League Baseball team. As such, they fell to 7-22 and continue to own one of the 20 worst starts in baseball history.
Charlotte Knights 6, Norfolk Tides 1 Sorry to the hard-working men of the Charlotte Knights, but Tuesday’s Big Story was not their inspiring and decisive win but Colson Montgomery’s demotion to Arizona to work on his swing. Montgomery has hit an abysmal .204/.313/.361 in his one-plus season in Triple-A, and we have reached a critical stage in his development. We know how this is going to turn out, and at this point a serviceable, average major-leaguer is all we can hope for from 2021’s first round pick.
In the game, Kyle Teel continued to thrive as a primary catcher, going 2-for-4 and pulling his average almost back to .250. Should-be-in-Chicago masher Tim Elko had two singles.
Pensacola Blue Wahoos 3, Birmingham Barons 2 Hagen Smith is murder on Double-A, but he’s his own worst enemy, providing the answer to a question of how can a team have just two hits but score three runs and win? Smith walked the bases full and then, angry (?), hit a Wahoo to give Pensacola its first run. Smith had seven Ks, so all is not lost beyond his control. The Barons fell to 11-10.
Winston-Salem Dash 5, Greensboro Grasshoppers 0 Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but Lucas Gordon is really good. The southpaw chiseled his ERA to 2.28 with five shutout innings and six Ks. I get it, his profile is one that lines up for hitting a brick wall in Double-A, but how about we find out, White Sox? There’s nothing left to prove for him in High-A (a statement that applied in 2024 as well). Gordon’s greatness inspired Wes Kath to a two-run homer and Braden Montgomery his first career High-A hit and RBI. The Dash improved to 8-14.
Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 4, Augusta GreenJackets 3 The good times continued in A-ball, with a walk-off Kanny win. Down one entering last bats, Javier Mogollón led off with a single, moving to second on a wild pitch. Impressive bat Lyle Miller-Green tied the game with a single one out later, and pinch-runner Ryan Burrowes scored the winner on a Calvin Harris double. The CBs moved to an affiliate-best 12-10.
