Should WWE Keep Karrion Kross?
The rumor mills from the last month escalated when Karrion Kross and Scarlett were moved to the alumni section on WWE’s official website. While WWE is notorious for blurring the lines of kayfabe and reality, we should evaluate if Karrion Kross and Scarlett are worth keeping on. If so, where can they fit in WWE’s plans moving forward?
Karrion Kross was Triple H’s first signing after he took control in 2022. After an appearance at Starrcast for Ric Flair’s Last Match, Kross returned the Friday after on SmackDown, causing a rift at the end of the show. With Triple H’s support in NXT and closing SmackDown in a big way, many thought Kross would be a big time player when they were struggling to create stars from NXT.
Instead, Kross has struggled to find a groove on the main roster for the majority of his return. In the duration of his 3-year contract, he’s had three chapters.
The first was obscurity. Kross fell into the trap of signings and returns that are brought back with no real plans set in stone. If you asked a diehard fan the program Karrion Kross instantly jumped into with his return, most wouldn’t be able to recall. That’s the majority of Karrion’s run, and while it wasn’t the repackaging Vince McMahon made him go through, fans were disappointed with the lack of direction for Kross.
Chapter 2 is making Kross the leader of The Final Testament. Kross paired with Akam and Rezar, the Authors of Pain, and assembled a group of masterminds led by Kross, Scarlett, and the legendary Paul Ellering. It felt like this would be the group to not only give Kross television time, but to elevate him on the card. The biggest achievement was reaching WrestleMania 40 in a match against Bobby Lashley and the Street Profits, but outside of this, the Authors of Pain got released and Kross was back with no real direction.
Chapter 3 has been more promising. Kross in this new singles run, for whatever reason, has captivated the audience. Kross has subtly interacted with superstars backstage and has altered their character in significant ways. But now that he’s putting himself on screen with these superstars, fans want to see more of Kross in the ring. Fans have begun begging WWE with “we want Kross” chants, which has gotten louder since Kross has been on not one, but two premium live events this summer.
Triple H heard those chants while he addressed the Brock Lesnar questions on the SummerSlam post-show panel. Triple H told fans they got him. But if the rumors are true and WWE has let their contracts expire, WWE didn’t give the people Kross. Rather, they quenched the fire right as it was heating up.
The biggest hurdle for WWE superstars is the audience buying into them. When they buy in, they buy merch, and that makes money. Many superstars have come through WWE talented enough to make it, but if the fans are invested, they’re just another warm body taking up space in catering. It’s the emotional support from the fans that separate the legends from the superstars.
Since fans are getting behind Kross, it would be in WWE’s best interest to get behind him as well.
If Kross does re-sign with WWE, they need to secure him for the next three years and feed into his momentum in the storylines.
Kross might not be a main event star. There are plenty of names who fans got behind and didn’t reach the pinnacle of becoming world champion. Sami Zayn is currently on that list of people.
Kross would need to continue his direction with altering careers but with a heightened sense of impact. Kross could toy around with Cody Rhodes, who some fans believe should turn heel in his career. Kross could impact members of the Judgment Day as that faction is set to implode. There’s so many key stories that Kross can have his fingerprints on to excite the fans, even to the point of challenging for the Intercontinental or United States Championships.
Scarlett has posted her booking email on social media, leading to wider speculation that both her and Karrion Kross are finished with WWE and the company’s opted to not renew her contract. Never say never in WWE, as R-Truth was a free agent for a few days before he returned as Ron “The Truth” Killings. If there’s enough public backlash, WWE will find a way to re-sign Karrion Kross and keep he and Scarlett under their banner.
