Should the Tigers Go after Cedric Mullins?

The Detroit Tigers have had an ongoing carousel of centerfield fill-ins with Javier Baez of all people, having the greatest level of success as it relates to performance on both sides of the field. Due to injuries, and just an overall lack of production, the Tigers has struggled to find a spark at the top of the lineup, who can swipe a bag and set the table for the offense.

The Baltimore Orioles current Centerfielder Cedric Mullins, should be a name that is considered in a trade deadline swap. He is a 30 year old speedy Outfielder who can hit for power, and can defend his position at an above average clip. Although Mullins is having a bit of a down year he has still managed to slug 14 Homeruns and plate 42 runners. All while playing for a bad Orioles team that is heading towards a rebuild.

The Tigers should be able to acquire Mullins for a bargain, given he would only be a rental, and Baltimore would be trying to get anything they can for him. The Orioles are sitll licking their wounds from parting with Kyle Stowers in last season’s trade deadline. He has since then transformed into an All-Star in a year’s time. He victimized this old team to the tune of 3 home-runs in his return to Camden Yards.

Mullins got off to a hot start the beginning of the season but has since then slowed down. On May 30th he was placed on the 10 day IL with a right hamstring strain. He now appears to have fully recovered and has returned to form.

The Baltimore Orioles have shown little to no interest in resigning Mullins long-term and their rich farm system has a number of replacements in the outfield. They avoided arbitration this past offseason, and agreed on a 1 year $8 million deal. Mullins will be a UFA in the offseason. Mullins would be a nice stop gap option to man center field until Detroit’s young phenom Max Clark is ready, which is looking like sooner than later. Ideally the Tigers could sign Mullins to an appealing enough AAV to intrigue him to hang around for just long enough to prep Clark to take over them helm in the next year or so.
