Should the Pistons Run it Back with Trey Lyles?

As it currently stands, The Detroit Pistons backup Power Forward is 6’6 second year player Ron Holland. Although he is coming off a solid rookie year and appears to be much improved this pass Summer League they could seek out the services of others in order to fortify that position. 8 year vet, and former Detroit Piston Trey Lyles is a durable power forward that is best served as a face up shooting floor spacer off the bench. At 6’9 with a 7’1 wingspan he can defend the paint and switch out on guards at an above league average. He primarily plays the role of spot up shooter but rebounds on both ends of the floor at a high level. Although he is a below average rim defender he would provide the positional size that Isaiah Stewart lacks off the bench.

On the opposite side of things, Trey Lyles will be 30 years old and coming off a down year, especially shooting wise. He finished with 6.5 points, while shooting 42% from the field and 34% from beyond the arc. When his shot is offย  he provides little impact on the offensive side of the floor. His lack of athleticism and lateral quickness makes it difficult for him to attack the basket or even draw fouls for that matter. In that event it would be a less than ideal fit with Isaiah Stewart who has his own set of offensive limitations.

Lyles had a career year back in the 2021-2022 season in his lone year with Detroit. He played in 75 games, and in 20 minutes of action averaged 10 points per game, on 46% shooting from the field and 32% from 3. The Pistons were seeking a young lob-threat to pair with Cade Cunningham and would elect to move Lyles and Delon Wright in exchange for for former lottery pick Marvin Bagley at the trade deadline. Lyles would now be playing on a much more talented team and would be afforded the ability to fall into a much more limited role. If Langdon is seeking a more size and stability at the 4, Lyles would be an excellent candidate sign.
