Saturday Night’s Main Event Flashback: Terry Funk Targets Hulk Hogan (1985)

Fans of the World Wrestling Federation didn’t know how great they had it when Terry Funk showed up.

Funk just seemed like a crazy old cowboy who was trying to win Hulk Hogan’s WWF title on Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Of course, Funk was one of wrestling’s all-time greats. He won the NWA World title in the 1970s and the ECW World title in 1997. He was one of the pioneers of hardcore wrestling.

EPISODE THREE

Funk earned a shot at Hogan’s title by defeating Junkyard Dog in the opener. Funk used Jimmy Hart’s megaphone to score the victory.

On Piper’s Pit, Rowdy Roddy Piper insulted Uncle Elmer and the other hillbillies, setting up a six-man bout on the next show.

Hogan teamed with Andre the Giant to defeat King Kong Bundy & Big John Studd. The heels were disqualified for excessive double teaming.

Intercontinental champion Tito Santana battled Randy “Macho Man” Savage to a double-countout. Everyone could see that Savage was going to be a huge star.

EPISODE FOUR

Jesse Ventura moved from the commentary desk into the ring. “The Body” teamed with Roddy Piper & “Cowboy” Bob Orton to beat Uncle Elmer, Hillbilly Jim & Cousin Luke.

Hogan defeated Funk to retain the WWF title after a running clothesline. Junkyard Dog was in Hulk’s corner to keep Jimmy Hart from interfering.

Randy Savage defeated George “The Animal” Steele, who was distracted by Miss Elizabeth. This would happen more than once.
