San Francisco Treat: Cleveland Guardians Outlast the Giants

Cleveland Guardians fans can be forgiven for lacking confidence heading into last night’s game against the San Francisco Giants.

Seattle had just swept the Guardians, and next up was Giants left-hander Robbie Ray, who had an 8-1 record.

Not only that, but San Francisco had gone all-in by trading for Rafael Devers, the expensive and disgruntled Boston Red Sox slugger.

But what do you know? Cleveland pulled off a 3-2 victory.

THANK YOU, SLADE

Slade Cecconi earned his second victory of the season. In five innings, he gave up four hits and two runs.

He gave the Guardians a chance to win before turning the game over to the bullpen.

Michael Festa, Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis, and Emmanuel Clase scattered six hits and two walks over the last four innings.

Somehow, they kept the Giants from scoring any more runs.

JUST ENOUGH OFFENSE

Dominic Smith gave San Francisco an early lead with an RBI single in the first inning.

Cleveland tied the game in the third when Austin Hedges hit a sacrifice fly to score Johnathan Rodriguez.

Devers won over the fans at Oracle Park with an RBI double in the third inning to give the Giants a 2-1 lead.

Cleveland tied the game again in the top of the fourth when Carlos Santana singled to score David Fry.

Gabriel Arias smashed a 412-foot home run to dead center field in the sixth inning.

Thanks to the Cleveland bullpen, that was the game winner.  Clase escaped a bases-loaded jam to earn his 15th save and lower his ERA to 3.82.

The Guardians will try to keep the good-time trolley rolling tonight at 9:45 Eastern. Logan Allen (4-4) will start against Justin Verlander, who is seeking his 263rd career win.
