Run Runaway: Slade Cecconi Earns First Win for Cleveland Guardians

Cleveland Guardians fans who were disappointed with the Josh Naylor trade in the offseason finally have something to make them smile.

Slade Cecconi, who came from the Arizona Diamondbacks in the trade, pitched six strong innings as the Guardians beat the Tigers 3-1 on Friday night.

Cecconi (1-1) gave up one run on five hits and two walks, striking out six.

His emergence in the Cleveland rotation is critical, as the Guardians just received the bad news that Ben Lively will have to undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

By the way, how is Josh Naylor doing in the desert? He’s batting a healthy .289 with 29 RBI. However, he has only hit five home runs.

When Cecconi pitches at home, he needs to come out to this song.

START THE PARTY

Cleveland wasted no time getting the offense going against Detroit’s 22-year-old starter, Jackson Jobe (2-1).

Jose Ramirez smashed a triple to center field to score Steven Kwan in the first inning.

Carlos Santana beat out an infield single (at age 39!) to score Ramirez.

Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson slugged his 13th homer of the season off Cecconi to cut the Guardians’ lead to 2-1 in the sixth inning.

Hunter Gaddis pitched two scoreless innings of relief for Cleveland, and Kwan added an insurance run in the ninth with a single to score Bo Naylor.

Emmanuel Clase earned his 10th save for the Guardians, lowering his ERA to 4.29.

KEEP THE MOMENTUM

Cleveland has won three in a row and trails Detroit by four games in the AL Central Division.

Luis Ortiz (2-5) will start for Cleveland tonight against the Tigers’ Casey Mize (6-1). First pitch is set for 7:15.
