Rockies yield six home runs, drop series finale 13-5 against the Mets
The Colorado Rockies’ season-long struggles deepened on Sunday, as they fell to the New York Mets 13–5 at Coors Field, completing a three-game sweep that mirrored the series in New York last week. The offensive onslaught was led by Mets superstars Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil, making franchise history and New York’s lineup dishing out six home runs in a dominant performance.
From the outset, the Mets announced their intention. Jeff McNeil delivered a solo shot in the second inning, giving New York a 1–0 lead and igniting the bats. The floodgates opened in the following innings: Francisco Alvarez’s RBI single extended the lead, then Alonso blasted his first of the day—a two-run homer in the third—tying David Wright’s franchise mark for home runs at 242.
But that was just the start. McNeil struck again in the fourth with a three-run blast, stacking on the power and making it clear this was the Mets’ day. Alonso wasn’t done either—his eighth-inning two-run shot lifted him past Wright to second place all-time in Mets home runs with 243. Brett Baty and Alvarez later joined the party, each hitting homers as New York unleashed six in total.
Amid the home runs, Juan Soto quietly put on an offensive masterclass. He reached base six times—three hits, three walks—a feat unseen by a Met since Alonso in 2019.
Tylor Megill held the Rockies hitless through four innings, finishing with five strikeouts over five innings while allowing just two runs.
On the Colorado side, rookie Chase Dollander was crushed, surrendering five runs on eight hits over just three innings. Combined with Saturday’s 8–1 loss, it meant the Rockies had been outscored 21–9 in the weekend series. The Rockies threw out five runs on 10 hits, with Jordan Beck going 2-for-5 with a couple of RBI while Ryan McMahon and Tyler Freeman both had two hits. The Rockies struck out eight times but did have four walks and showed some late life with two runs on the ninth. They went 5-for-18 with RISP.
The Rockies will take a day off on Monday and return to action on Tuesday when they welcome the San Francisco Giants to town.
