Rockies Snap Skid with Freeland’s Gem, Goodman’s Blast in 3–0 Win Over Cardinals
After more than a week of frustrating baseball, the Colorado Rockies finally found the winning formula on Tuesday night, combining timely power with a vintage pitching performance to blank the St. Louis Cardinals 3–0 at Busch Stadium.
The victory snapped Colorado’s eight-game losing streak and marked just their second shutout of the season, both coming at the expense of the Cardinals.
Kyle Freeland, making his 22nd start of the season, delivered his best outing in years. The veteran left-hander went 7⅓ innings, scattering five hits while striking out two and walking two. It was his longest start since 2017, and he became the first Rockie since Márquez on June 24, 2022, to have thrown seven or more scoreless frames with two or fewer strikeouts. His strikeout of Jordan Walker in the seventh was the 900th of his career, making him just the third Rockie in team history to reach 900 or more strikeouts with the franchise.
Freeland wasn’t overpowering, but he was ruthlessly efficient, inducing three double-play balls to snuff out potential threats, tying a career high.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth, when Hunter Goodman turned the tide with one thunderous swing. Facing Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore, Goodman unloaded on a 2-0 fastball, sending it 442 feet to left-center, the longest home run at Busch Stadium this season. The blast, his 23rd of the year, gave the Rockies a 2-0 lead.
Kyle Farmer tacked on an insurance run in the fifth, lacing an RBI single to right off reliever Matt Svanson to make it 3–0.
Victor Vodnik entered the game in the eighth and secured a five-out save, allowing just one hit and striking out three.
It was a much-needed win for the Rockies, who will now look to win the series on Wednesday with Austin Gomber on the hill to face off against Michael McGreevy.
