Rockies Shut Out in Houston as Offense Goes Quiet Again
The Colorado Rockies endured another frustrating night at the plate on Tuesday, falling 4–0 to the Houston Astros at Daikin Park. The loss underscored a recurring theme of the 2025 season: solid pitching undone by an offense that has struggled to produce runs with any consistency.
Rockies rookie starter Chase Dollander gave the team a chance to win, navigating Houston’s potent lineup through six innings of work. After allowing a run in the first inning, Dollander ended up going six innings, giving up just the one run on three hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.
The Astros built on their lead in the seventh inning when Cam Smith, mired in a long power drought, lifted a solo home run to put Houston ahead 2-0. One inning later, the game slipped further away as Yordan Álvarez, playing just his second game since returning from injury, hammered a 421-foot two-run shot off reliever Angel Chivilli.
In total, the Rockies managed only three hits against Astros ace Framber Valdez, who spun seven scoreless innings and induced his usual mix of groundouts and weak contact. Colorado drew two walks but rarely put runners in scoring position, continuing a trend that has plagued them during a season where runs have been difficult to come by away from Coors Field.
The shutout loss dropped the Rockies deeper into the National League basement, with the team inching closer to another 100-loss season. Dollander enjoyed a solid bounce-back game after a couple of rough starts, but his command is still a bit shaky. However, the offense just couldn’t get anything going outside of Tyler Freeman’s two hits.
They will look to win the series on Thursday in an afternoon affair. Kyle Freeland takes the ball for Colorado and will face off against Jason Alexander.
