Rockies secure first walk-off of the season 8-7 against the Giants

The Colorado Rockies snapped a five-game slide with an 8-7 walk-off victory over the San Francisco Giants on June 12, at Coors Field. Trailing 7-5 heading into the ninth inning, Colorado staged a dramatic comeback against Giants closer Randy Rodríguez. With two outs and the bases loaded, Orlando Arcia laced a two-run single to center field that scored the tying and winning runs, lifting the Rockies to an 8-7 win and avoiding a home sweep. The walk-off triumph was Colorado’s first of the season, ending the losing streak and improving the club to 13-55 on the year. The victory also spared the Rockies their 12th home loss in a row – a 7-27 start at Coors Field, the worst in franchise history

San Francisco took control early. In a rough outing for Colorado starter Antonio Senzatela, the Giants quickly built a big lead. Mike Yastrzemski and Heliot Ramos began the second inning’s assault with consecutive hits, and a couple of wild pitches helped San Francisco score two runs. Later in that inning, Wilmer Flores added an RBI double. After a brief Rockies rally, Giants designated hitter Dominic Smith unleashed a 443-foot, three-run homer in the fifth inning against Senzatela to extend the lead to 7- 2. In all, Senzatela was chased after four innings, having allowed seven runs on nine hits with three walks.

Relievers Jimmy Herget and Juan Mejía kept Colorado in it in the middle innings. Meanwhile, San Francisco starter Hayden Birdsong delivered six innings of work for the Giants, surrendering only three runs on six hits with six strikeouts

Trailing 7-2 entering the fourth inning, Colorado began chipping away. With two outs in the fourth, shortstop Ryan Ritter singled home two runs, cutting the deficit to 7-4 (Rockies unofficial scoring). In the sixth, right fielder Mickey Moniak hit a solo home run to make it 7-3. In the seventh, second baseman Thairo Estrada – in his return to Coors Field – drilled a two-run RBI double down the left-field line to score Jordan Beck and Sam Hilliard, narrowing the score to 7-5 Those swings by Moniak and Estrada brought Colorado within two runs and set the stage for a tense ninth inning.

Heading to the ninth, Giants manager Bob Melvin turned to setup man Randy Rodríguez (3-1) to close out the game. Rodríguez struck out pinch-hitter Braxton Fulford to start the frame, but then walked Sam Hilliard with one out. Thairo Estrada followed with a solid double to left field that pushed Hilliard to third base, and Ryan McMahon drew another walk to load the bases. With the tying and winning runs on base, reserve infielder Brenton Doyle hit a ground ball that could have ended the game. San Francisco’s third baseman Casey Schmitt, filling in for the injured Matt Chapman, misplayed the ball on a routine double-play grounder. The bobble allowed Hilliard to score and kept the bases loaded.

With two outs and the Rockies down by one run, Denver acquired a season-defining hit. Orlando Arcia came to the plate and worked the count full. On the ninth pitch of the at-bat, Arcia lined a single to center field that scored Estrada and McMahon, sending the Coors Field crowd into pandemonium and sealing an 8-7 Rockies victory. Seth Halvorsen, a rookie reliever, then retired Logan Porter on a groundout to complete the scoreless ninth and earn the win. The two-run walk-off single was the culmination of Colorado’s nine-run rally over the final five innings after being behind 7-2.

The Rockies will now head out to Atlanta to face off against the Braves to kick off a road trip on Friday that will also feature the Washington Nationals.
