Rockies Ride Tanner Gordon’s Gem, String Together Second Straight Series Win

The Colorado Rockies put together one of their most complete performances of the season on Wednesday afternoon, blanking the St. Louis Cardinals 6–0 at Coors Field. Rookie right-hander Tanner Gordon delivered the best start of his young career, the offense provided early support, and the bullpen slammed the door to secure Colorado’s second consecutive series win.

For a team that entered the All-Star break with the worst record in baseball, the past week has offered a rare and welcome dose of optimism.

In his fourth start with the Rockies this season, Gordon looked poised and composed from the first pitch. The 26-year-old scattered four hits and three walks over six shutout innings, striking out four and avoiding damage in key spots. He earned his second career victory and, more importantly, helped the Rockies snap a historic streak.

Colorado had gone 220 straight games without recording a shutout, the longest drought in modern baseball history. That ended emphatically on Wednesday thanks to Gordon and a bullpen that finally lived up to expectations.

The Rockies didn’t wait long to give their starter some breathing room. In the bottom of the second inning, Colorado strung together five straight singles off Cardinals starter Andre Pallante, who couldn’t escape traffic. Austin Nola, Kyle Farmer, Adael Amador, Tyler Freeman and Mickey Moniak laced the five straight hits to drive in four runs combined.

Jordan Beck hit a sharp line drive to left field for a double that scored the Rockies’ fifth run in the fifth inning and Ezequiel Tovar blasted his fifth home run of the year in the eighth inning to give the Rockies a 6-0 lead.

Jimmy Herget took over in the seventh and worked two scoreless innings with minimal trouble. Tyler Kinley then handled the ninth, preserving the shutout with ease. It was a much-needed clean outing for a bullpen that has been battered and overused all year.

The Rockies will have the offday on Thursday before beginning a road trip with a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday.
