Rockies recall Carson Palmquist, select Dugan Darnell
The Colorado Rockies announced Friday that they have recalled left-handed pitcher Carson Palmquist from Triple-A Albuquerque. Additionally, they have selected the contract of right-handed reliever Dugan Darnell from Triple-A.
The Rockies entered their weekend series against the Pittsburgh Pirates a little shorthanded in the bullpen after trading veteran Tyler Kinley to the Atlanta Braves and Jake Bird to the New York Yankees at the Trade Deadline.
Palmquist returns to the big league roster after a brief stint with the club in the rotation. The crafty lefty posted a 7.63 ERA in seven starts, tossing 30 1/3 innings with 22 strikeouts against 18 walks. He battled his command but did show instances of what makes him an effective pitcher. However, his return to the club will come in a new role as he will operate out of the bullpen. The team has been without a lefty in the pen since sending Ryan Rolison back to Triple-A.
He returned to Albuquerque as a starter, posting a 3.50 ERA over 18 innings across three starts. However, over his last three outings the he has come out of the bullpen, allowing four runs (all coming a 1 1/3 inning outing) through five innings. He will likely operate in a swing-man role in the bullpen, operating as a lefty specialist as well as a long reliever. The Rockies found he was much more successful the first time through the order in the big leagues, limiting opponents to a .222/.286/.333 slash.
Darnell, 28, was an undrafted free agent signed by the Rockies in February 2021. He finished his college career at Adrian College, where he played third base, batting over .300 and then came out of the bullpen his final year of school. His skills out of the bullpen were quite appealing as he posted a 0.39 ERA over 20 appearances with 37 strikeouts. He caught the Rockies’ eye on the indy ball circuit and they picked him up before the 2021 season.
He dazzled with a 1.95 ERA across two minor league levels, spending the majority of the year with the High-A Spokane Indians. He was rattled a bit more the following season in Double-A, recording a 5.29 ERA across 47 2/3 innings but still posted strong strikeout numbers.
He adjusted to the level the following season and dominated with a sub-2.00 ERA, earning a promotion to Triple-A, where he continued to display strong strikeout numbers despite getting hit a bit harder. However, he has eventually come to adjust to the level after tough 2023 and 2024 seasons and currently owns a 3.19 ERA over 53 2/3 innings across 35 appearances this season. He has 63 strikeouts against 19 walks.
The Rockies now have 39 players on the 40-man roster.
