Rockies lose 4-3 as Cubs walk it off in extras

Victory remains elusive for the 2025 Colorado Rockies as they fell to 9-46 on the season following a heartbreaking 4-3 extra-innings loss to the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. Despite a valiant effort to rally back, the Rockies couldn’t hold off the Cubs in the 11th inning, marking their eighth consecutive loss at Wrigley.

The Cubs struck first in the third inning, capitalizing on aggressive baserunning. Ian Happ’s stolen base set the stage for Seiya Suzuki’s RBI single, followed by Pete Crow-Armstrong grounding into a fielder’s choice that brought in another run, giving Chicago a 2-0 lead.

The Rockies responded in the fourth inning. Jordan Beck’s stolen base put him in scoring position, and Ryan McMahon delivered with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 2-1. Brenton Doyle then provided a spark for Colorado in the seventh inning with a solo home run, his fifth of the season, tying the game at 2-2.

There was a glimmer of hope in the top the 11th inning as Doyle grounded out, allowing Ezequiel Tovar to score and giving the Rockies a 3-2 lead. However, the Cubs answered in the bottom half when Michael Busch’s RBI single tied the game, and Jon Berti’s stolen base set up Matt Shaw’s walk-off hit, sealing the 4-3 victory for Chicago.

Pitching was excellent for the Rockies, giving them a chance to win. Germán Márquez started for the Rockies, pitching six innings and allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out six. Rookie hurler Cade Horton took the mound for the Cubs, delivering six innings with six strikeouts and allowing two runs.

Both bullpens continued the action as the Rockies allowed just one hit in regulation, before Tyler Kinley was stung for two runs on two hits in 1 1/3 innings of work to take the loss. The offense didn’t help either party much as the Rockeis went 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base, while the Cubs went 4-for-13 and left 11 men on base.

The Rockies will look to bounce back in the next game of the series, aiming to break their losing streak at Wrigley Field. The Cubs, riding the momentum of this win, will seek to continue their strong performance at home. Tanner Gordon will make his second straight start since being recalled last Friday to face the New York Yankees. He’ll be opposed by Matt Boyd for the Cubs.
