Rockies finish out forgettable April with Win over Braves
The Colorado Rockies snapped their losing streak with a 2–1 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday afternoon at Coors Field, salvaging the final game of their three-game series. and improving their record to 5-25 on the year.
The victory all started on the mound thanks to rookie pitcher Chase Dollander. The righty delivered a standout performance, securing his second win of the season as he held the Braves to one run over 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on two hits and issuing three walks while striking out four. He was removed from the mound game in the sixth inning because of a cracked nail that split and was bleeding. He becomes the first Rockies starter to notch two wins on the season.
Despite setting the franchise record for longest hitless streak for a position player, Ryan McMahon contributed on the field, making a diving stop on a ball hit by Nick Allen in the fifth inning to prevent a double and save a run.
Offensively, the Rockies capitalized early. In the second inning, Sean Bouchard grounded out to the shortstop, allowing Hunter Goodman to score and give Colorado a 1–0 lead after he singled and reached third on a Michael Toglia double. The Braves responded in the top of the third when Michael Harris II grounded out to second, bringing home David Baldwin to tie the game. However, Brenton Doyle quickly reclaimed the lead for the Rockies in the bottom of the third with a solo home run to left-center field, his fourth of the season, making it 2–1.
The Rockies’ bullpen preserved the narrow lead, with relievers combining for three scoreless innings. Jake Bird relieved Dollander and tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts, followed by Seth Halvorsen’s two strikeouts in the eighth as the Braves had the top of the order coming up. Zach Agnos allowed one hit in the ninth but secured his first big league save of the season.
Despite the loss, Braves’ starter Chris Sale pitched effectively, allowing two runs over seven innings with 10 strikeouts. However, Atlanta’s offense couldn’t muster enough support, managing only three hits throughout the game.
This win marks a positive note for the Rockies, who have struggled throughout the season and still sit last in all of baseball. With a new month ahead of them, they head out on the road for their first series in San Francisco on Thursday night. They’ll look to build on this momentum as they prepare for their next series.
