Rockies Fall to Cubs 2-1, Swept in Chicago Series

The Colorado Rockies’ struggles continued Wednesday night at Wrigley Field, as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Chicago Cubs, completing a three-game sweep. The loss drops the Rockies to a league-worst 9-47 record, while the Cubs improve to 35-21, maintaining their lead in the National League Central.

The Cubs wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. In the bottom of the first inning, Seiya Suzuki doubled to center field, driving in Kyle Tucker for a 1-0 lead. Suzuki’s RBI marked his 51st of the season, placing him atop the MLB leaderboard.

In the fourth inning, Pete Crow-Armstrong extended the Cubs’ lead with a solo home run to right field, his 15th of the season. The 379-foot blast came off Rockies starter Tanner Gordon, giving Chicago a 2-0 advantage.

Colorado managed to cut the deficit in the sixth inning. Mickey Moniak led off with a single, advanced to third on a failed pick-off attempt, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Freeman. However, the Rockies couldn’t capitalize further, leaving what little runners they did have stranded and failing to mount a comeback.

The Rockies’ offense was stifled by Cubs starter Matthew Boyd, who delivered six innings of four-hit ball, striking out eight without issuing a walk, and allowing one unearned run. Boyd improved his record to 5-2 with a 3.08 ERA. Daniel Palencia closed out the game, earning his fourth save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.

Tanner Gordon, making his third start for Colorado this season, allowed two runs on six hits over 4.2 innings, striking out one without a walk. Despite the loss, Gordon showed promise, keeping the Rockies within striking distance. The bullpen provided solid relief, with Ryan Rolison, Jimmy Herget, and Victor Vodnik combining for 3.1 scoreless innings. However, the offense couldn’t provide the necessary support to turn the tide. Making his Rockies debut, newly acquired Orlando Arcia had two of the Rockies six hits as the team struck out 11 times with no walks.

The Rockies will head to New York to begin a three-game series against the New York Mets on Friday.
