Rockies fall on wrong side of pitcher’s duel again, lose 3-1 against the Cubs

On Memorial Day, the Colorado Rockies continued their challenging season with a 3–1 loss to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. This defeat drops the Rockies to a league-worst 9–45 record, while the Cubs improve to 33–21, maintaining their lead in the NL Central.

The game began with the Cubs taking an early lead in the first inning. Ian Happ reached base on a single and advanced to third on a double by Nico Hoerner. Dansby Swanson then grounded out to third, allowing Happ to score and giving the Cubs a 1–0 advantage.

The Rockies managed to tie the game in the fifth inning when Mickey Moniak hit a solo home run to right-center field, his fifth of the season. However, the Cubs quickly regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Matt Shaw singled and later scored on an RBI single by Kyle Tucker, putting the Cubs ahead 2–1.

In the seventh inning, the Cubs added an insurance run. Shaw reached base again and advanced to third on a single by Hoerner. Tucker then hit a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Shaw to score and extending the Cubs’ lead to 3–1.

Rockies’ starter Carson Palmquist delivered a solid performance, pitching five innings and allowing two runs on three hits while striking out four batters. The walks came back to haunt him and the Rockies but it was a promising start that showcased the talent that has made him appealing to the club.

On the mound for the Cubs, Jameson Taillon was impressive, pitching 6⅓ innings and allowing just one run on four hits. He struck out seven batters and did not issue a walk, earning his fourth win of the season. The Cubs’ bullpen held the Rockies scoreless for the remainder of the game, with Daniel Palencia securing the save

Offensively, the Rockies struggled, managing only five hits and striking out nine times. Moniak’s home run was the lone bright spot in an otherwise quiet performance at the plate. The Rockies had chances to tie up the game or take a lead, but they went 0-for-3 with RISP.

The Rockies will look to bounce back in the second game of the series on Tuesday. Given their current struggles, they face an uphill battle against a confident Cubs team.
