Rockies fall 5-3 to Mets, suffer 10th sweep this season
The Colorado Rockies have suffered yet another new low for their historically bad season. After dropping 5-3 decision to the New York Mets at Citi Field, completing a three-game sweep and extending their losing streak to eight games, the Rockies fall to a league-worst 9-50, still in search of their elusive 10th win of the season. It’s the first time a team in Major League Baseball history has gone 9-50. It was the 10th sweep the team has suffered and the fourth eight-game losing streak for the club.
The Mets showcased their power at the plate, with Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, and Pete Alonso each hitting home runs. Alonso’s three-run homer in the fourth inning gave the Mets a 3-1 lead while Lindor’s homer in the fifth gave them a 4-3 lead. Soto’s homer in the eighth gave the Mets an insurance run and a final score of 5-3.
Despite the loss, the Rockies had some bright spots offensively. Orlando Arcia got the Rockies on the board first, 1-0 in the top of the third. Tyler Freeman provided a two-run home run in fifth to tie up the game 3-3, but that would be all the Rockies could generate offensively.
Carson Palmquist took the loss for the Rockies, allowing four runs on four hits over 4.1 innings. He cruised through the three innings, and ended up striking out eight hitters on the day. However, he started to lose his command the second time through the lineup and the Mets took advantage. The bullpen held the Mets to one run over the final 3.2 innings, but the damage had already been done.
Clay Holmes earned the win for the Mets, pitching seven innings and allowing three runs on three hits. Edwin Díaz closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning, striking out the side to earn the save, his 13th of the season.
The Rockies will look to snap their losing streak as they head to Miami to face the Marlins in a three-game series starting Monday.
