Rockies end first half with 4-2 loss to the Reds
For the 73rd time this season, the Colorado Rockies were on the losing side of box score as they fell 4-2 to the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday to end the first half. With the loss the Rockies extend the record for most losses heading into the All-Star Break in major league history, having surpassed the Chicago White Sox 71 losses on Saturday.
The Reds struck first in the bottom of the first inning when TJ Friedl launched a solo homer off Austin Gomber, putting Cincinnati ahead 1–0. Colorado fought back in the top of the third with a two-run single from Mickey Moniak, but that would end the scoring for the Rockies on the day.
Cincinnati responded with a tying run in the bottom of the third thanks to an Austin Hays RBI single to score Friedl. They would add the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth when a costly error by shortstop Ryan Ritter kept an inning alive, allowing Friedl to score and load the bases. The Reds would add an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when an RBI single from Spencer Steer made it 4-2.
Reds’ starter Nick Martínez delivered 5⅓ innings, yielding two runs on five hits, walking one and striking out three. On the mound for Colorado, Austin Gomber worked 4⅓ innings, allowing three runs (two earned), giving up six hits, walking two, and punching out three.
The Rockies had seven hits with Ritter delivering two of them, but going 1-for-7 with RISP spelled doom for the Rockies who went 1-for-17 over these last two games.
They will regroup during the All-Star Break before welcoming the Minnesota Twins to Coors Field on Friday.
