Rockies edge Diamondbacks 4-3 behind Goodman’s homer and strong bullpen effort
The Colorado Rockies snapped their four-game losing streak to the Arizona Diamondbacks with a tight 4-3 victory Friday night at Coors Field, powered by Hunter Goodman’s bat and a steady bullpen that held off late pressure.
Goodman wasted no time giving Colorado an early jolt, hammering the first pitch he saw from Arizona starter Brandon Pfaadt with two outs over the fence for a solo home run, his 25th of the season. The quick strike set the tone for the Rockies’ offense, which relied on a mix of timely hitting and aggressive baserunning to manufacture runs the rest of the way.
The Rockies tacked on a second run in the bottom of the third when rookie Ryan Ritter, making his first start off the injured list, swatted a lead off double. He eventually came in to score on a Mickey Moniak sac fly to make it a 2-0 ball game.
ookie third baseman Kyle Karros chipped in with a pair of hits and scored a run, continuing to make an impression in his first weeks at the big-league level. His single in the fourth eventually led to him scoring on a groundout to give the Rockies a 3-2 lead. In the fifth inning, Tyler Freeman sparked a rally with a triple and came home on Jordan Beck’s two-out RBI double, giving Colorado a lead it would not surrender.
On the mound, right-hander Tanner Gordon rebounded after a rough outing in his last start. He worked five innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out two. The bullpen carried the load from there, locking down Arizona’s lineup the rest of the way. Jimmy Herget dominated the sixth and seventh with four strikeouts, Juan Mejia tossed a clean eighth, and Victor Vodnik closed it out with two strikeouts in the ninth to earn his fifth save of the season. In total, the bullpen allowed just one hit.
The Rockies will continue the series on Saturday night with rookie Chase Dollander facing off against Ryne Nelson.
