Rockies drop Coors Field slug fest 14-8 to the Diamondbacks
It was a classic Coors Field slug fest on Friday, but the Colorado Rockies came up on the short end as the Arizona Diamondbacks battered them to a 14-8 defeat, handing Colorado their 59th loss of the season.
The Diamondbacks struck first in the top of the first. Lourdes Gurriel Jr.’s RBI single drove in Ketel Marte, putting Arizona up 1–0. A Jose Herrera double in the second scored Randal Grichuk to put the Dbacks up 2-0. Colorado responded in the bottom of the third when Tyler Freeman delivered a clutch RBI single to score Ryan Ritter, making it a 2-1 ball game.
Things erupted in the 4th inning, beginning with Arizona’s explosive rally: Grichuk led off the inning with a triple and scored on Ildemaro Vargas’s single. Then Ketel Marte launched a monstrous three-run homer—his 13th of the season—turning a 3–1 lead into 6–1. The Rockies weren’t beaten yet: Colorado struck back with six runs to take the lead. McMahon lead off with a solo home run, his 12th of the season and was later followed by Mickey Moniak’s two-run home run to cut the lead 6-4. The Rockies strung together a few more hits, including another RBI single from Freeman and a two run double from Hunter Goodman to give the Rockies a 7-6 lead.
Arizona equalized 7–7 in the fifth when Eugenio Suárez hit his 23rd home run of the season, followed later by Vargas blasting a two-run shot, his first home run of the season. The pendulum swung again in the top of the sixth when Suárez capped a dominant performance with a two-run blast to push the Diamondbacks ahead 11–7.
Arizona kept the pressure on into the seventh when Ketel Marte added a two-run double, and Grichuk followed with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, expanding the margin to 14–7. While Colorado managed a consolation run in the eighth via a sac fly from Ritter giving the final score of 14-8.
The teams combined for 33 hits in the game but the Diamondbacks’ use of the long ball proved a difference maker. Arizona’s Zac Gallen earned the win despite surrendering seven runs and 10 hits over five innings, finishing with five strikeouts. Colorado’s Austin Gomber took the brunt of the damage, lasting 4 2/3 innings, giving up nine runs, 12 hits, and one walk for an ERA of 8.38. A notable mark was that the Rockies pitching recorded just one strikeout against two walks in the game.
The series continues Saturday evening when Carson Palmquist will face off against Merrill Kelly.
