Rockies complete sweep of the Marlins with 3-2 victory
The Colorado Rockies completed a three-game sweep of the Miami Marlins today with a 3–2 victory at loanDepot Park, marking their first series sweep of the 2025 season. This win not only extended their winning streak to three games but also improved their record to 12–50, providing a much-needed boost to a team that has struggled throughout the season. It was their first sweep since May 2024, ending a 57 consecutive series streak without a sweep. It was also the first sweep of the Marlins by the Rockies since 2006.
The Rockies’ offense was led by Hunter Goodman, who continued his impressive performance, going 2-for-4 with an RBI triple in the first inning to get the Rockies on the board first. The Rockies had six total hits in the game, with Jordan Beck delivering an RBI double in the fifth to give the Rockies a 2-0 lead and Brenton Doyle delivering a sacrifice fly to score Goodman to give the Rockies a 3-0 lead. That sac fly ended up being the difference maker in the game.
Starting pitcher Kyle Freeland delivered a solid performance, allowing two runs, both unearned, over 6 1/3 innings. He cruised through the game but ran into some trouble in the seventh inning after shortstop Orlando Arcia committed an error and Eric Wagaman hit a double. With two men in scoring position, Heriberto Hernandez hit an RBI single to drive in one run and chase Freeland from the game. Jake Bird came out of the bullpen to face Jesus Sanchez, who has had an excellent series, as a pinch hitter for Dane Myers. Sanchez drove in a run on a ground ball with the Rockies getting a force out at second base. Liam Hicks came in to pinch-hit and laced a double to left field. Sachez hustled to try and score from first, but a perfect relay from Beck to Arcia to Jacob Stallings at the plate cut down the tying run and ended the inning.
The bullpen held the Marlins scoreless for the remainder of the game, with Victor Vodnik tossing a clean eighth inning and Tyler Kinley securing the save in the ninth.
This series sweep is particularly significant as it follows the Rockies’ recent end to a record-setting streak of 22 consecutive series losses. The team’s performance in Miami suggests a potential turning point in their challenging season, however, they will had back to Coors Field to welcome the New York Mets on Friday. It’s hard to put much stock into the sweep over the Marlins, who aren’t exactly the best team in baseball, but there were positives to building some momentum that could help the Rockies gain some confidence.
