Rockies comeback falls short in 10-6 loss to Brewers
The Colorado Rockies stepped onto the field at American Family Field in Milwaukee, hoping to snap a skid—and instead watched a promising game unravel, ultimately surrendering to the Brewers, 10–6. The high-scoring affair highlighted both bright spots and persistent struggles for Colorado, particularly on the mound.
The game began as a pitcher’s duel. Rockies’ starter Kyle Freeland (1–9), struggling all season, faced Milwaukee’s veteran José Quintana (6–2). Quintana was sharp, allowing only two hits and a walk through the first four frames, while Freeland matched zeroes despite letting Brewers leadoff hitters reach base in each of the initial three innings. The Rockies’ defense bailed him out with timely double plays and clutch fielding but things unraveled in the fourth.
The Brewers broke the stalemate in the bottom of the fourth, unleashing a six-run outburst. Brice Turang’s two-RBI single and Sal Frelick’s RBI base hit pushed Milwaukee ahead 3–0. The inning’s crescendo arrived when Jackson Chourio launched a three-run homer, capping the “crooked number” and sending the Brewers to a commanding 6–0 lead. Freeland’s start was over after four innings, allowing six runs and snapping a quality start streak.
Despite the deficit, Colorado battled back. In the top of the fifth, Brenton Doyle and Braxton Fulford started the rally with back-to-back singles, followed by a ground out from Ryan Ritter that scored the first run. A few batters later, Thairo Estrada delivered a two-run single, trimming the lead to 6–3.
That same inning saw another run slip in for Milwaukee—an balk by reliever Jimmy Herget allowed William Contreras to score, pushing the score to 7–3. Not to be deterred, Colorado again chipped away in the sixth. Fulford, continuing his standout night, added an RBI double to bring the score to 7–4 . The rookie’s three-hit, three-RBI evening offered a bright spot amid a tough outing.
The Brew Crew tacked on an RBI groundout by Chourio and a two-run double from Christian Yelich in the eighth inning, swelling their lead to the final score 10–6. The team kept pace I the hits department but Milwaukee did what the Rockies haven’t been able to do, cash in runners on base.
The loss extends Colorado’s losing streak to seven losses in their last eight games and they now sit at 18-64 on the season. Antonio Senzatela takes the hill in game two on Saturday against Quinn Priester.
