Rockies clobbered 8-2 against Mets, enter June with just nine wins
The Colorado Rockies’ struggles continued on Saturday as they suffered an 8-2 defeat to the New York Mets at Citi Field, marking their seventh consecutive loss. The Mets’ offense ignited early, and their pitching staff effectively contained the Rockies’ bats throughout the game.
The Mets set the tone in the first inning with a four-run outburst, highlighted by Brett Baty’s bases-clearing triple. Brandon Nimmo homered in the fourth and was later followed by Juan Soto, ending a home run drought that had lasted over three weeks, extending the Mets’ lead. The Mets added three more runs in the fourth, capitalizing on the Rockies’ pitching woes and one more in the eighth.
Kodai Senga delivered a strong performance on the mound for the Mets, pitching 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs, and striking out seven batters. His efforts kept the Rockies’ offense in check, limiting them to just three hits over the course of the game.
The Rockies managed to score single runs in the first and seventh innings but were unable to mount, highlighted by Ezequiel Tovar’s home run in the first. But they mustered just three hits in the game. Antonio Senzatela, starting for Colorado, struggled, surrendering seven runs over four innings, raising concerns about the team’s starting rotation depth and his future with the team.
With this loss, the Rockies’ record fell to 9-49, underscoring the challenges they’ve faced this season as they are the first team to not have 10 wins this late in the season. The Mets, conversely, improved to 36-22, showcasing their dominance in the series thus far. The teams are set to conclude their series on Sunday, with the Rockies aiming to salvage a win and the Mets looking to complete the sweep.
