Rockies can’t provide fireworks in loss to White Sox

Rockies’ Antonio Senzatela (3‑12, 6.57 ERA) and White Sox’s Adrian Houser (4‑2, 1.60 ERA) engaged in a scoreless duel through the first three innings. Coors Field’s hitter-friendly reputation took a back seat as both hurlers effectively neutralized opposing bats. In the top of the 4th, Chicago broke through: Andrew Benintendi singled to lead off the start of the inning, followed by Miguel Vargas single. Edgar Quero walked to load the bases, and a subsequent two-run RBI line-drive by Michael Taylor gave them a 2‑0 lead.

Colorado responded in the bottom of the 5th. A throwing error by White Sox third baseman José Rojas allowed Michael Toglia to score and let Ryan Ritter reach safely, advancing to second base. Then, Tyler Freeman slugged a clutch double that tied the game at 2‑2, giving the home crowd a spark.

The score didn’t last long as Edgar Quero launched a solo home run to right field, giving Chicago a 3‑2 advantage they would not relinquish.

The Rockies struggled at the plate as White Sox starter Houser cruised on the mound. He ended up going eight innings, allowing just two runs, neither of them earned, while striking out six and allowing just two walks. He threw 96 pitches, inducing 10 groundouts. Senzatela kept pace but dealt with much more traffic, lasting just 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. Grant Taylor slammed the door in the ninth, fanning two and sealing the 3‑2 victory for the White Sox.

Despite solid nights from Mickey Moniak and Michael Toglia, the Rockies again struggled to get much of anything going against Houser. They remained aggressive in the box but couldn’t string together enough hits to sneak ahead in the box score. The Rockies did have a highlight as rookie Yaquiel Fernandez did collect his first big league hit.

With the loss the Rockies drop to 20-68 while the White Sox improve to 29-59. The two teams will again face off on Saturday with German Marquez facing off against Jonathan Cannon.
